Hello mac79,

I'll let your log be analyzed by helpers who are more up to date than I am on the latest baddies. But on a quick look I don't see anything all that bad… but don't take my word for it. You may want to post in this topic to get attention to this one here.

Quick questions: How old is the computer? Has it been cleaned of dust bunnies recently? Usually, a self shut down of Windows while the computer is busy is a sign of overheating. Overheating can have various causes, the most likely of which is dust. I noticed you have a lot of applications running also. You might want to include a little more info on the computer in your followup posts. (i.e. CPU type/speed, amount of memory, and such)

You could also try to run some maintenance. Clear temporary internet files, history, scandisk, defragment… All of those things can help greatly in improving performance.
Here is a section of this forum that has many topics that deal with regular maintenance. http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showforum=89

Hope this helps

OK. Thanks for the additional info mac79! With the specs this machine has, it should not be a resource problem… You have plenty of resources there to run with. I'll see if I can find out more about your log, but it seems to be a hardware related problem. Do you hear noise coming from the fans before the machine shuts down? What type of CPU is it? AMD/Intel? Does it support Hyper-threading? Have you tried scanning while in safe mode? Does it power down there too? I"ll see if I can get someone with a little more hardware experience to look in here and see if they have some more suggestions. One thing I noticed in that log, is that you are using mcafee antivirus and firewall. From personal experience, mcafee is known to be a resource hungry program (the AV part of it at least) that can interfere with other scanners. You may want to try to run a scan with AVG AS while mcafee's resident shield is off and see if it completes. I do not advise to turn the resident shield off while you are online though. Disconnect from the internet to run tests. With regard to your PM, it is better if you post in this thread as I, like most others here, don't provide help via PM. It is in the better interest of the community that help be provided in one spot. Less confusing that way. I doubt if connection speed would be a factor in your case. I use dial up too and it isn't blazing… ;) Hang in there… we'll try to help the best we can. Regards,
OK mac79,

After some research and consultation, I'd like you to run a full test at PCPitstop. You must register at the site and post back here your techexpress link (it is free and safe and you don't have to subscribe to any newsletters and such if don't want to).

Go here http://www.pcpitstop.com/ and select the Full Tests in the menu bar at the left side of the screen. You will be prompted to accept an ActiveX control or two to run the tests. They are safe and required to run the tests. Once the tests are complete you will be able to view the results and recommendations. On the results screen, there will be a bar on the upper right hand corner of the page with a big "TechExpress" link. Click on it and it should display a link in a brown box that looks like this "http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?id=(random numbers and letters)".
I want you to come back and post that link as a reply here in this thread. This is a good battery of tests that should help troubleshoot the issue or at least point us in the right direction.

Also, I'd like you to run Everest 2.20 (free) and post a quick report on temperatures. You can find the program here. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
It is a 4MB download so if you can't do it right away, that's ok. Once you do get it, I want you to open it and go to the Computer - Sensor section in the lefthand menubar. Highlight Sensor and go to "Report" in the menu bar at the top and do a Quick Report - Sensor - Plain Text. Save it to file and copy and paste the contents of the Sensor section here also.

Will await your reply.

Regards and best of luck!
Look Like I got bad news on this Everest link appear's they did away with there free software.. EVEREST Home Edition is a freeware system information, system diagnostics and benchmarking solution for home PC users, based on the award-winning EVEREST Technology. It offers the world's most accurate system information and diagnostics capabilities, including online features, memory benchmarks, hardware monitoring, and low-level hardware information. New features: - Advanced hardware monitor with OSD panel and cooling fans monitoring - Real-time alerting for hot-plug devices - Portable Computer page to display mobile PC related information - Bluetooth PAN support - File Scanner filtering - User benchmark results manager - Sharpness test (Monitor Diagnostics) Limitations: Lavalys has discontinued the free edition. This is unsupported.
Thanks for that! I don't see anything that would help diagnose the issue. The only minor problem shown, which you've probably already seen from your PCPitstop test is the size of your IE cache. You can fix that (if you haven't done so already) by going to tools - Internet Options in IE. On the General Tab Under Browsing History Click the Settings button. In the "Disk Space to use" box enter a number between 10 and 100. I've got mine set at 75 to give you an idea. It will limit the amount of space the Temporary Internet Files (TIF) will take on your system. Be sure to apply and ok out of the dialog screens to accept the changes. Note that they won't be reflected until IE is restarted. Although that is unrelated to your issue. Any news on those other questions? Have you tried running the scans with AVG in safe mode? As for Everest, I am aware they have discontinued their free version but you can still get the last free version on the majorgeeks site. I have it installed and it runs just fine. The disclaimer they have posted on majorgeeks is to let people know that if they have a problem with the software, they can't expect any support for it. It's a pretty good benchmarking tool that'll give you lots of info on the various parts of your system. It is very informative and pretty simple to understand how to work it. Regards,
