OK - now I read the directions - couldn' see them well in safe mode.

I did the things to do before" Task manager still says I have 60 processes running. After about five minutes the screen goes black, and the computer reboots.

Your HJT program is outdated, just delete the whole folder, use the links in my signature at the bottom of the page to download and install the latest version 1.99.1 and post a new log please.

Thanks for your reply - I've admired your work. THis may take a while, as the the victim computer shuts down before I can download, and won't connect properly to my network whilein safe mode. I don't want to move items back & forth to my laptop via flash drive for feel I will toast it. I'll be working on it. Thanks

I am not looking at anything bad in the way of Malware or such, you do have a couple of things on your system that could be causing you problems.

1. Napster is not the most desirable program to have on your computer, wouldn't want it on my system.

2. XCP CD Proxy This is copy protection software from Sony.


Ewido mainly found only cookies. :thumbup:

How old is your computer?? sometimes what you are discribing could be a faulty power supply.


A couple of things to try, you will need your windows CD to run these.
  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
    You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.


Then try this
You can boot from your windows CD, it will give you an option to access the Recovery Console, when it does, choose the R for Repair and it will go through your whole operating system repairing any corrupted or missing files.



Run this system cleaner, your system could be clogged up pretty well.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. Thank You Atribune :D
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.


If none of the above helped, lets run Blacklight, its a quick scan that may show us any bad files that are hidden from your HJT log.

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked.
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

If blacklight is clean, I can direct you to some windows support sites that deal with this sort of issue.

Thank you very much. Computer is less than a year old. First thing I thought was hardware, But it will run all week in safe mode. still . . . . I printed the steps and will execute them. Seems Napster and XCP CD Proxy are traceable to younger members of the family. I guess it's inevitable, and will teach me to maintain a "Safe point" to fall back to more diligently. Sould I try to kill napster first, or run Scannow first? And can I run Recovery Console Repair from the D: partition on the harddrive? Thanks again - I will be working on this as late as I can afford to, so it may be tomorrow night before I can re-post.

Yep, kids install all that stuff <_< They love Myspace, limewire , Bearshare, all not so good programs to install.

You can remove Napster from the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Lets hold off on removing Sony copy protection. I dont believe there is an option to uninstall it. Its installed when you insert a Sony Music or Movie CD. We can disable it, but then your music wont play, its a hard decision to make. Let do all the other things and see what happens, that may fix it.

Yes you can boot to the D drive and access the Recovery console that way.

Thank you. I will work through this - I assume it can all be done from safe mode. I have put he hammer back in the tool box, taken the chain saw back to the garage - - you have commuted this box's sentence for a day or two.

Booted from D: to use the recovery console, and discovered no R for Repair option. Thought I might lose it all, but most of my data is still there. MS Office need a re-install, and I need to re-configure some other stuff. Learning the hard way!

You can read the links I posted in my previous reply. Keep in mind that only one Anti Virus program is needed, more than one will cause you problems.

Here is a list of my own..



Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

Be sure to follow the instructions for System Restore because everything we removed is backed up in that program and if you ever use it to revert your system to an earlier date, you can reinfect your self all over again.


Download and Install CCleaner

* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < When it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes Tutorial for CCleaner


Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.

* Clean out your Temp Files
* This procedure should be run from Safemode for better results.


Boot into Safemode

* Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
* Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard




* Go to My Computer/ C: Drive/ Documents and Settings/ Every User on this Computer Local Settings and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder and the Temporary Internet Files Folder <–Just the contents, not the folder itself.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Temp and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder <– But not the temp folder itself.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder. <–But not the Prefetch folder itself.



Reboot your system normally


Close any instance of Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
  • Go to Start> Control Panel> Internet Options . You shoud be on the General Tab
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Files > and offline content as well

Now Empty your Recycle Bin


System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.
  • Right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.
  • Right-click My Computer.
  • ClickProperties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
    You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember, You will have to be in Catagory View to see this


Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one. Just install one because with AV software…MORE IS NOT BETTER.
* AVG Free Edition
* AntVir Personal Edition


* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.

* Windows Updates Go to Start> Control Panel> Security Center> Windows Updates and check the radio button that says " Notify me but don't automatically download and install them "

* Go to Start> All Programs> Assessories > System Tools> Disk Defragmenter. This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.
