Some of my cleaning software reports files in:
c:\documents & settings\my name\local settings\temp
as unremoveable. Typically the filename is: perflib_perfdataNNN.dat
where NNN varies. There are occasionally other variants of perflib.
A google search gives no clues, except some Japanese, which I've forgotten.
The file behaviour is very interesting: They are assigned neither Read Only, System nor Hidden attributes. If I try to delete them I get a Windows message saying they are in use by another process. Scanning them with AVG says they are innocent. If I try to examine them (with ZTREE for Windows) I get a Sharing Violation error. Never been accused of violation before . . .
I rebooted using an NTFS4DOS boot disc - and the files are gone. On rebooting in XP they were again absent - but within a few keystrokes of doing something unrelated they were back again. There is nothing sinister in my Task Manager.
Should I worry? Should I cancel my dog's credit cards, emigrate, or write a book . . .
Regards,
Philip
Brilliant - just the information I needed.
For the record and those who need to know the answers: perflib_xxx files in temporary folders are innocent and part of Windows. They may however refuse to be deleted. They get deleted on shut-down, but are quickly re-instated by Windows. Occasionally they get overlooked by their natural deletion cycle, and persist as what are termed "orphan" files. Ignore them.
Many thanks
Philip
