GWFes.dll BHO

The DLL named GWFes.dll is named as a BHO and a WinLogon item in my HIJACK log, the relevant entries are shown here: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {66A9CFD3-7AC4-459B-AB05-B80964B4DD51} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\GWFes.dll O20 - Winlogon Notify: GWFes - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\GWFes.dll HIJACK can't kill it, and I can't remove its Registry entries or delete the file, even in SAFE Mode. I suspect it is malware because it won't die, and when I open it in NOTEPAD I see this in the first line: "MZKERNEL32.DLL LoadLibraryA GetProcAddress ". A Google search indicated that MZKERNAL32.DLL is some kind of file downloader. Is there anything else I can try? Thanks! Steve

Please go ahead and post your hijackthis log. Although you may not be able to kill it by checking hijackthis entries, we also look at other things also and work from there. We have other tools we can use.

STEP 1.
======
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt in the next reply.
STEP 2.
======
Combofix
  • Download this file - combofix.exe
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please post(reply) with the vundofix.txt, the ComboFix log and a new hijackthis log.

I didn't find a "VundoFix" log, but, it did find and kill the "GWFes.dll". After running HijackThis again, HijackThis was able to "Fix" the BHO reference to "GWFes.dll", (the file had already been deleted).

Your log appears to be clean.

You need to update your Java.

Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

Let's run one more scan to double-check things please.
Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your reply along with a hijackthis log.

I'm a Kaspersky Theorist…

It took several tries to get their ActiveX component to install and run properly. But I finally got it to the "Scan Settings" point you mention.

Then the scan took over 2.5 hours, much of it wasted on huge help files installed by Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 – MSDN files with extensions like: ".hxs".

A Kaspersky Consipiracy Theorist might suspect she was an unwitting BETA TESTER for software that was not quite finished… I'm OK with that! Got the wet t-shirt!

But if you have them on the phone, tell 'em that showing "Error on page" in the Browser's Status Bar for the duration of the scan doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the process, or the result!

Tell them the error: Line: 114 Error: Access is denied
Char: 2 Code: 0

URL: …/kos/eng/partner/default/karwebscan.html

They need to clear the Status Bar early in the process, but only once…

Glad Kapersky did not find anything. I always feel better seeing two clean anti-virus logs.
Your hijackthis log appears to be clean.

I notice that you are using the Symantec Internet Security. If this does include a firewall then you are fine. If it does not include a firewall component and you are relying solely on the Windows XP firewall, I would recommend that you use another firewall application. Sometimes it is difficult for me identify what components a person is using in a package.

STEP 1.
======
System Restore for Windows XP
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
