Need Help removing Trojan/Spyware

I have a trojan or spyware called virtumondo on my system. I was able to scan in MS AntiSpyware Beta1 and it found virtumondo in the registry. I was able to get rid of those registry keys so MS AntiSpyware B1 does not find anymore. However, the files are on my system as BHO's, in the system start up ini files. Both of the files in question (and I may have more from this hijackthis scan) are:
c:\windows\system32\jkhfe.dll (MS Events Object)
c:\windows\system32\jkkjj.dll (virtumondo)
I am constantly having unwanted pop-ups come up. Nothing I do can remove these files from my system. MS AntiSpyware B1 cannot remove the MS Events Object jkhfe.dll as it is hooked to IE and also the BHO's.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing .

This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, Notepad will open with a log. Copy/paste the contents of that log into this thread.


IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

  • In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Copy a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

After the reboot, delete these files if they still exist:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jjkkj.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jjkkj.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jjkkj.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jjkkj.bak1

They will be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these files.

My browser hangs up when clicking on vundofix.exe. I navigated to the site to see if that file exists. It does not. Here is what I found written by the administrator at Atribune.org:

Alot of time was spent developing VundoFix.zip. Figuring out how to remove the infection in the easiest possible way.

In the last few weeks a new variant of Virtumonde aka Vundo was released and Vundofix.zip no longer worked.

The link just worked for me, and the file DOES exist. It used to be a ZIP file, and they changed it to an EXE. That is what the message you posted is about. Give it another try. :)

I tried in vain. I even used Avant Browser with connect direct bypassing IE settings. Both hung up and would not allow me to copy the file to my desk top. I even copied and pasted the link to the address bar in both IE and Avant Browser. Everything freezes up. Man this must be a nasty one to be able to prevent me from getting this file on my system. I have another computer in the house and that does not have this trojan and easily extracted and saved to my desktop in less than 1 minute. So, have the vundofix.exe in my Gmail folder and will try and save to my desktop from there…will let you know in just a second….

Here is a new report o the I2mfix after running Webroot Spysweeper current version, which my friend recommended. Webroot Spysweeper seems to have take care of the maleware and trojan Virtumond an Maleware IE Hook except for jjkkj.ini, jjkkj.ini2, jjkkj.bak2, and jjkkj.bak1 as listed at the bottom of this new I2mfix report in c:\windows\system32 directory. There does not seem to be anymore infected HKEY's compared to the previous report. In checking the starup items in Spybot Search and Destroy Tools, the infection still seems to remain in the system ini a bak files. I was finally able to get the vundofix.exe file download to my desktop, but had to first download and use Mozilla Firefox browser. IE and AvantBrowser would not let me download, which I think was due to the infection. I have not run the vundofix.exe file and will hold off until you see this new report and instruct otherwise.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

Thanks! I was able to shred and delete these 4 files from system32. This is my family computer. I had the kids set up on their own identities but failed to make them limited users. I have taken drastic measures now, everyone knows what to do (and what they cannot do). I am strictly using FireFox now with Script blocked with user option to unblock per site. I also have TrojanHunter Guard as TomCoyote highly recommended for added protection, along with Webroot Spysweeper, etc. etc. I am reading your "Quote" preventative measures after cleaning and looking at other ways to protect further from this ever happening again.
