Hello Ben24,

Welcome to the Tomcoyote forum! I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

In order to help me help you, please observe the following while we work:
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't continue, we don't want to start all over again!
  • Understand that cleaning your computer can sometimes take multiple passes/posts,
and it's important to follow the steps as listed including re-running scans as listed
  • Please reply to this thread, do not start another.

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly
Hello Ben24,

The first thing I need you to do is move HJT (HiJackThis). It is running from a Temporary Internet Files. We have to insure backups are saved and not deleted.
If you have created a shortcut on your desktop right click on HiJackThis.exe icon and choose delete. Do not worry about the one you have in Temporary Internet Files it will be cleaned out when we clean infection.

Now redownload HJT.

Download HijackThis and save to your Desktop. Click HERE
  • Double click on hijackthis_sfx.exe and now choose unzip button it should install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis
  • Now click start > then My Computer > then double click C: drive
  • Double click Program Files folder > Then open HijackThis folder.
  • Now right-click on HijackThis.exe icon > and choose Send to > Choose Desktop( create a shortcut)
  • Done close all open windows
This is important to have done first.

————————————————————————————-

Some programs block tools to remove infection.
Please disable programs that can interfere with fix:
Disable SpywareDoctor's realtime protection.
  • Open Spyware Doctor
  • Click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
  • Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".
  • Exit the program.
—————————————————————-

Next do the following:
Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.
——————————————————————

Make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1.Start HijackThis

[external image: Posted Image]

2. Click on the Open the Misc tool section button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button

[external image: Posted Image]

4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

[external image: Posted Image]

5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save list button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply. Note: please uncheck word wrap under format in notepad

Post HJT Uninstall list in next reply

———————————————————–

Please post in next reply to this thread these logs
rapport.txt
HJT uninstall list
New HJT log
Thank you very much for helping me with this. I hope we can get it taken care of soon. Here are the things you asked for.

Viewpoint components are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting "Disable auto?updating for the Viewpoint Manager" ?? the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself.

Your may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.
Ok, so far so good, but I have a question about the last post. I'm at this point: "If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido. AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates. Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update." When I go to the page to update this manually, if gives me an option to download the full database for AVG, and ewido. I have the AVG program, but in your instructions you say to update ewido. I just wanted to clear up which one I download before I do anything. Thanks.
Hi Ben24,

Sorry about that it is AVG. This program use to be ewido I have to get my brain to remember that Ewido has a new name.
Use this Update database for AVG.

Hello Ben24,

Thanks for posting logs. I am very sorry for the delay in repling been a busy week.

this one didn't give me a chance to quarantine like you said to do, it wasn't a highlighted option, so I deleted them.

That is fine those were cookies that needing cleaning.

Same as before make sure Spyware Doctor is disabled (turn-off) so it does not block removal of infected folder.
If already disabled skip to next step.
  • Open Spyware Doctor
  • Click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
  • Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".
  • Exit the program.
AND THIS PROGRAM TOO IF IT IS NOT ALREADY DISABLED

Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon (or click Start, then select My Computer)
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Hello Ben24,

Thanks for posting logs.
I have never used McAfee SpamKiller If you know how to empty out those bad files I would. If you need help with that let me know and I can ask our ADMIN/Mods here if they know how I am sure someone here would know.

Infected files found in scan.
There is a lot of infected files sitting in these folders that should be cleared out…
Open Outlook program > then open deleted items(looks like a recycle bin) and Empty out highlight everything in here and hit delete key on keyboard.

I don't use outlook not sure but this one way you can try to find infected files: in left hand side of outlook screen click on other shortcut tab click on
My Documents > main screen(outlook rightside) double-click on backup.pst to open > double-click on Personal Folders to open > double-click on
Deleted Items to open > highlight everything in here and hit delete key on keyboard

OR

Use Explorer to navigate to and delete what is inside Deleted Items folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Ben Larson\My Documents\backup.pst/Personal Folders/Deleted Items/ {{{this is location of files to be delete in here}}}

Do not leave any infected files that could restore and infect your computer.

Your OS is in bad need of updating from windows update website. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. You are wide open for reinfection.
This should be done ASAP

These programs need updating also
Adobe Reader needs updating to version 8, and Office 2000 is probably in need of updates too. Microsoft Office 2000 requires that you visit the Microsoft Office Update site in order to get updates, unlike later versions of Office that can be updated via the Microsoft Updates site.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Stand up and be Counted.

NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.
