Any help with this perplexing issue will be VERY MUCH appreciated. I have a recurring pop-up adware problem. Originally, I thought it was causd by something called sp-servers.com . IE would open briefly and then be replaced by a secondary window with the “sp-servers.com” name and an IE designation in the title bar even though I was using Firefox and IE was not running. That window would remain and then spawn multiple, smaller ad windows all with IE designations. My initial thought was that IE was being hijacked but further investigation leads elsewhere.

Steps Taken Thus Far:
 Scanned with updated versions of Norton Antivirus, AVG Anti Spy, Tech Micro, SpyBot S&D, SpywareBot, SpywareBlaster, Adware SE, Kaspersky – No problems found. No change in pop-ups.
 File search for sp-servers.com – Deleted results, files reappeared later.
 Uninstalled IEv6 using XPLite - No Change
 Reinstalled IEv6 using XPLite – No Change
 Installed IEv7 – Initial pop-up add appears but without a title bar (No “sp-servers.com” or IE designation. No secondary windows spawned.
 Ran Registry Booster – 425 “problems” fixed. No change in pop-ups.
 Ran ATF Cleaner – Cleaned out all files except passwords – No change in pop-ups.
 “Safe Mode” scan with AVG – No problems, log below.
 “Normal Mode” Scan with AVG, SpyBot S&D and Adware SE – No Problems, AVG log follows.
 “Normal Mode” Hijackthis scan – Log follows.

Current Symptoms:
 Single pop-up appears about every 20 min.
 IEv7 does not try to open.
 Pop-up has no IE designation in title bar.
 Pop-up appears in a single window without secondary spawns.
 Pop-up occur even if no browser is running.
 Pop-up appears even if IE is uninstalled.
 File search for “sp-servers.com” – Nothing found
 Pop-up DOES NOT appear in safe mode.
 Pop-up DOES NOT appear when disconnected from internet.

Examples of ad URLs:

http://www.lustydesires.com/
 res://ieframe.dll/navcancl.htm#http://www.231796.home-biz-craze.com/

Since the ads DO NOT appear in Safe Mode or when disconnected from the internet, it appears that the ads/adware are coming from the internet and are NOT resident in my computer even though Norton Antivirus is enabled. Something in my system is allowing this to happen.

AVG “Safe Mode” Log:

+ Scan result:
Nothing found.

AVG “Normal Mode” Log:

+ Scan result:

::Report end

Hello stevena48 and Welcome to TomCoyote,

STEP 1.
======
Combofix
  • Download this file - combofix.exe
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

STEP 2.
======
SDFix

Download SDFix.zip
and save it to the Desktop.

Right click the SDFix.zip folder
Select: Extract All to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop.

====
Start the computer in Safe Mode :
-When the machine first starts again, tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
-Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
-Press Enter to boot into Safe Mode.

====
Open the SDFix folder on the Desktop, and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
The process removes any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found, and then prompts you to press any key to Reboot.

Press any key to restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the SDFix will run again and complete the removal process
It then displays Finished
Press any key to end the script and load the Desktop icons.

Once the Desktop icons load, the SDFix report opens on screen and saves itself in the SDFix folder as Report.txt.

STEP 3.
======
Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Security] C:\WINDOWS\WindowsSecurityUpdate.exe

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them (if they exist):
C:\WINDOWS\WindowsSecurityUpdate.exe<=file
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post (reply) with the Report.txt, ComboFix, and a fresh HijackThis log.
I still had the logs so here they are.

Thanks for helping—

I performed all the tasks as directed.

AlcBGndSrv.exe does seem to be related to http://www.alcormicro.com/products_list.php?main_id=12

AlcBGndSrv.exe properties:

Hello stevena48,

Your hijackthis log appears to be clean. I did not see the results from the ComboFix application but since your computer is running normally again, I assume the problem has been fixed.

These entries were not deleted and I am not sure why but they are incomplete entries and pose no risk.

Be sure and update your Java.

STEP 1.
======
System Restore for Windows XP
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

STEP 2.

DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!!

http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic….39eba6ea0b5e8ee

Stay up to date on security patches and be extremely wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive unbidden in instant messages and e-mail.

"The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software," Dunham said. "In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late."

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Updating Java
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

  • More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you for allowing me to assist you.
