Did you run a GMER scan, if not can you do so and send me the log please. I'm really just making absolutely sure that there's no hidden process preventing the removal of the 04 object, I believe it's probably Norton or Windows Defender that is stopping things. I don't want to have you uninstalling programs (which may be necessary) until I've established that there's no other explanation for the stubbornness of that entry.
Sorry, I posted twice earlier, you obviously didn't see the first post.

Download GMER and unzip it to your Desktop. (It will create a folder GMER)

Alternate Download Site
  • Disconnect from the Internet, and close all running programmes.
  • There is a small chance this programme may crash your computer, so save any work you have open.
  • Open the GMER folder, and double click gmer.exe
  • Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at programme start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan ….. click OK.
  • If no warning:
    • Click Rootkit tab.
    • Ensure that All the boxes to the right of the program are checked except Show All.
    • Click Scan.
  • Once scan is finished click Copy.
    • Click Start > Run then type Notepad.exe then click OK.
    • This will open a Notepad file.
    • Hit Ctrl+V to paste log into it.
    • Save the log to your Desktop.
  • Reconnect to internet and post the log please.
There's also a couple of things concerning services in that post I'd like you to attend to.
  • Click Start > Run then type services.msc click OK.
  • This will bring up the Services window.
  • Scan down till you come to a service named Remote Registry.
  • Double click on it to open the Properties box.
  • Click the Stop button, then set the Startup type to Disabled, click OK.
  • Scan down/up till you find the service Security Center.
  • Double click on it to open the Properties box.
  • Click the Start button, then set the Startup type to Automatic, click OK.
  • Exit the Services window.
If you have reason for having your Registry remotely edited, then miss out the Remote Registry section.
OK, lets try another tool.

Download AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta
  • Install AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta (this will involve a re-boot).
  • Once AVG Anti-Rootkit Beta is installed it will put an icon on your Desktop.
  • Double click it to launch the programme.
  • Click the Search for Rootkits button and allow the scan to complete.
  • If anything is found click the Save results to file button, and save the file to a location where you can find it.
  • DO NOT click the Remove selected items button until I've seen the log. This is a Beta version tool, and may find legit items.
  • Post the log back here please.
What a disaster, came home from work and no net connection, got it sorted now thou. I have not managed to follow your last instructions but will do so first thing tomorrow. Another possible problem. Loads of music on computer all tagged with ID3v Tag information, something is changing all the tag information and making it nonsense, could this be a virus???? When a say loads of music I mean over a 100 gig, other half is a DJ, so this is a major disaster. Hope to hear back from you soon. Kath
Hi Kath,

Bad news I'm afraid, you have the RustockB (pe386) Rootkit on your machine. This is a difficult infection to remove, and I'll need to consult with some of the experts to ensure that we deal with it in the best way.

In the meantime:

You are strongly advised to do the following immediately:

1. Disconnect infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.

2. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions. Inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

3. From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer, because the attacker will get the new passords and transaction information.

IF YOU USE THIS COMPUTER FOR ONLINE BANKING OR OTHER FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS, OR HAVE DATA OF A CONFIDENTIAL NATURE ON IT, MY RECOMMENDATION IS THAT YOU RE-FORMAT AND RE-INSTALL YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM AND PROGRAMMES. WE CAN NEVER BE TOTALLY SURE WE HAVE GOT RID OF ALL MODIFICATIONS WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN MADE BY THE ATTACKER, AND THEREFORE CANNOT GUARANTEE THE SAFETY OF YOUR DATA.

If you choose to re-format, instructions for doing so can be found HERE (courtesy of wng_z3r0).

If you choose to continue trying to clean up your computer let me know, and I'll post instructions for what to do.
I'm going to try and get rid with your help, please. I have changed my bank details already and am not going to access my account from here again. Is this what is changing the ID3v Tags? Kath
Hi Kath,

Is this what is changing the ID3v Tags?

Quite possibly, it's hard to say what this rootkit might be hiding until we get rid of it.

OK, lets have a go at getting rid of it.

Download RustBFix and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on rustbfix.exe to run the tool.
  • If a Rustock.b-infection is found, you will be asked to reboot the computer. The reboot will probably take quite a while, and perhaps 2 reboots will be needed. But this will happen automatically.
  • After the reboot 2 logfiles will open (%root%\avenger.txt and %root%\rustbfix\pelog.txt). (Where %root% is the root drive for your computer, usually the C:\ drive).
  • Save these logs.
Download ADS Spy and unzip it to your Desktop.
  • Double Click ADSSpy.exe to lauch it.
  • Select Full Scan (all NTFS Drives).
  • Click Scan the system for alternate data streams.
  • Once the scan is complete, select all instances of C:\WINDOWS\system32:lzx32.sys and click Remove selected streams.
  • Exit AdsSpy.
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: You must be using Internet Explorer as your browser as it will be necessary to install an Active X component to your computer.

Important If you have previously used Kaspersky Online Scanner (before 8th Aug 2006), you will have to uninstall the old version using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel before you can use the new version.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings.
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK.
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
I know you've run Kaspersky before, I'm just repeating the instructions so you don't have to look them up.

Now can you send me the following logs please:
  • C:\avenger.txt
  • C:\rustbfix\pelog.txt
  • Kaspersky log.
  • A new HJT log.
PLEASE FIND ENCLOSED THE FOUR LOGS YOU REQUESTED.

Thankyou
Hi Kath,

The rootkit appears to have been removed successfully, however nothing much seems to have been exposed by its removal.

Your Kaspersky log apart from some infected System Restore points looks clean. You cannot be re-infected from your System Restore Points unless you do a System Restore, we'll clean them out when we've dealt with everything. I like to keep them intact till the end in case anything goes awry, better an infected RP than no RP.

The ADSSpy scan was really done as a backup to the RustBFix, I didn't expect there to be anything left after RustBFix was run.

I'm curious about the ADS file found however, as its a temp file there should be no harm in removing it.
  • Double Click ADSSpy.exe to launch it.
  • Select Full Scan (all NTFS Drives).
  • Click Scan the system for alternate data streams.
  • Once the scan is complete, select all instances of C:\Documentsandsettings\AllUsers.Windows\ApplicationData\Temp:DFC5A2B2 and click Remove selected streams.
  • Exit AdsSpy.
Lets also see if we can get rid of the troublesome HJT entry.

Run a scan with HJT and check the following entry.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.ERS_9999_N91S2007] "c:\documents and settings\gordon.gordon-mainpc\application data\errorsafespecialofferinstall[1].exe" -nag

Close all open windows and click Fix Checked to (hopefully) remove it.

Make sure that you can see hidden files and folders.
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files a pop up will appear, answer Yes
  • Click OK.
Search for Hidden Files
By default, the Search companion does not search for hidden files. Because of this, you may be unable to find files, even though they exist on the drive.

To search for hidden or system files in Windows XP:
  • Click Start.
  • Click Search.
  • Click All files and folders.
  • Click More advanced options.
  • Click to select the Search system folders
  • Click to select the Search hidden files and folders check box.
  • Click to select the Search sub-folders
Now search for and delete the following file if found (it may now be visible now the rootkit has been removed).

c:\documents and settings\gordon.gordon-mainpc\application data\errorsafespecialofferinstall[1].exe

Post a new HJT log please, and details of any remaining problems (be as detailed as possible, include any error codes or messages you may have rercieved).
Still no luck, followed your instructions but it appears to still be there.

Kath
Hi Kath,

Was the file errorsafespecialofferinstall[1].exe present on your computer. (I suspect not).

If there was no file, then I'm as sure as I can be, that the 04 entry is just being retained there by one of your defensive programs, which replaces it as soon as it is removed by HJT.

Do you have the discs/downloads for your various defensive programs?

If so, go offline, physically disconnect your internet connection (this is important), then uninstall Windows Defender.

Run HJT and try to remove the 04 entry.

If successful re-install Windows Defender and re-connect to the Internet, send me a new log.

If not, uninstall Norton next, and try again. Repeat with each of your defensive programs until we find out which one is responsible.

Once you have successfully removed the entry, re-install your defenses and reconnect, then send me a log.

If the entry refuses to be removed after all defensive programs have been removed, re-install them and let me know.

Sorry this is a real pain to do, but there is no easy way that I know to get round the problem, and we need to know that there is not something else hiding on your computer.

Do Windows Defender first, as that is most likely to be the culprit, then Norton, as both these programs have a history of getting in the way at times.

I may be unavailable for the next couple of days because of Christmas commitments, but I'll try to get online if possible.

Hope you and your family have a very Happy Christmas.
Hope you had a good christmas.
Still no luck, removed all programmes and it's still there.
