Hi Kayla99,

I'm Gary R, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

As an introduction, please note I don't know everything, what I do know has taken me years to learn and I'm happy to pass on this information to you, but bear in mind that I'm also fallible. I do have a very knowlegable group behind me who I can ask if needs be.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

You have signs of a RAT (Remote Access Trojan) on your computer.

You are strongly advised to do the following immediately:

1. Disconnect infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.

2. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions. Inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

3. From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer, because the attacker will get the new passords and transaction information.

IF YOU USE THIS COMPUTER FOR ONLINE BANKING OR OTHER FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS, OR HAVE DATA OF A CONFIDENTIAL NATURE ON IT, MY RECOMMENDATION IS THAT YOU RE-FORMAT AND RE-INSTALL YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM AND PROGRAMMES. WE CAN NEVER BE TOTALLY SURE WE HAVE GOT RID OF ALL MODIFICATIONS WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN MADE BY THE ATTACKER, AND THEREFORE CANNOT GUARANTEE THE SAFETY OF YOUR DATA.

If you choose to re-format, instructions for doing so can be found HERE (courtesy of wng_z3r0).

If you choose to attempt to clean your computer, then do the following.

First of all there are signs of both Norton/Symantec and AVG Anti-Virus programmes running on your computer. It is not advisable to run two AV programmes, as they conflict with each other and can cause all sorts of problems. If both are active, you need to uninstall one or other of them. (If you have recently uninstalled Norton and installed AVG, let me know as there are a number of "orphans" that need removing).

Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and uninstall the following program (if found).

Delfin Media Viewer

We need to remove a couple of services.
  • Click Start > Run now type sc stop "Network Monitor" click OK.
  • Click Start > Run now type sc delete "Network Monitor" click OK.
  • Click Start > Run now type sc stop cmdService click OK.
  • Click Start > Run now type sc delete cmdService click OK.
Note: There is a space between sc and stop/delete, and a space between stop/delete and "Network Monitor" / cmdService.

Run a scan with HJT and check the following entries (if found).

Close all open windows and click Fix Checked to remove them.

Make sure that you can see hidden files and folders.
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files a pop up will appear, answer Yes
  • Click OK.
Search for Hidden Files
By default, the Search companion does not search for hidden files. Because of this, you may be unable to find files, even though they exist on the drive.

To search for hidden or system files in Windows XP:
  • Click Start.
  • Click Search.
  • Click All files and folders.
  • Click More advanced options.
  • Click to select the Search system folders
  • Click to select the Search hidden files and folders check box.
  • Click to select the Search sub-folders
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode
  • If your computer is running, shut down Windows, then turn the power off.
  • Wait 30 seconds, then turn the computer on, and begin tapping the F8 key.
  • The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. (If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again).
  • Select Safe Mode using the up/down arrow keys.
  • Press Enter.
  • Log on with an account that has administrator priviledges (NOT the account named Administrator).
Find and delete the following files and folders.

These Files
c:\secure32.html
rpcc.exe
c:\documents and settings\gordon.gordon-mainpc\application data\errorsafespecialofferinstall[1].exe

Note: you'll have to do a search for rpcc.exe, it's most probably found in this location C:\Windows\System32\rpcc.exe

These Folders
C:\Program Files\PeDevice
C:\Program Files\outlook
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nfomon
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vidmon
C:\WINDOWS\R29yZG9uIEMu
C:\Program Files\Network Monitor
C:\Program Files\Common Files\{784D356A-04E2-1033-0801-03101399002c}

Let me know of any difficulties finding/deleting these files/folders

Download AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Launch AVG by double-clicking on the icon.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • You will need to update AVG to the latest definition files.
  • At the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then in the Manual Update section, click on Start Update.
[*]The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

[*]When updates are completed, close AVG.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG.

Looking better, did you check and remove O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.ERS_9999_N91S2007] "c:\documents and settings\gordon.gordon-mainpc\application data\errorsafespecialofferinstall[1].exe" -nag because it's still showing in your log.

Did you attempt to remove the file: c:\documents and settings\gordon.gordon-mainpc\application data\errorsafespecialofferinstall[1].exe ?

If not

Run a HJT scan and check

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.ERS_9999_N91S2007] "c:\documents and settings\gordon.gordon-mainpc\application data\errorsafespecialofferinstall[1].exe"

Close all open windows and click Fix Checked to remove it.

Now find and delete this file (in bold)

c:\documents and settings\gordon.gordon-mainpc\application data\errorsafespecialofferinstall[1].exe

OK, please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings.
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK.

  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post please, along with a new HJT log.

Scan process completed.
We need to disable Windows Defender as it is interfering with the fix.

To disable Windows Defender Real-time Protection
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools > General Settings.
  • Scroll down to Real-time Protection Options.
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended).
  • Close Windows Defender.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.

Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and uninstall the following program (if found)

MyWebSearch (or anything similarly named).

Download Pocket Killbox and install it to your Desktop. Do not run it yet.
  • First copy the filepaths in the box below to your clipboard, by highlighting them and pressing Ctrl+C.

c:\documents and settings\gordon.gordon-mainpc\application data\errorsafespecialofferinstall[1].exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\{784D356A-041A-1033-0801-03101399002c}\services.dll
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\F3CJPEG.DLL
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\F3HISTSW.DLL
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\F3HTMLMU.DLL
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\F3POPSWT.DLL
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\F3PSSAVR.SCR
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\F3REPROX.DLL
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\F3RESTUB.DLL
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\F3SCHMON.EXE
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\F3SCRCTR.DLL
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\F3WPHOOK.DLL
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\M3OUTLCN.DLL

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\MWSOEMON.EXE
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\MWSOEPLG.DLL
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\1.bin\MWSOESTB.DLL

  • Open Killbox and check a mark in the "RadioBox" which says Delete On Reboot
  • Click File > Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click All Files button.
  • Click on the Red button with a Cross, and answer Yes when prompted to Backup and Delete the pasted files.
  • Answer Yes when prompted to Reboot now.
If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Now run a scan with HJT and check the following item.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.ERS_9999_N91S2007] "c:\documents and settings\gordon.gordon-mainpc\application data\errorsafespecialofferinstall[1].exe" -nag

Close all open windows and click Fix Checked to remove it.

Now delete the following folders.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\{784D356A-041A-1033-0801-03101399002c}
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch

Run a new scan with Kaspersky and send me the log please, along with a new HJT log.
Hi Kath,

Highlight them by using SHIFT and your down arrow key, then click EDIT > COPY.

Alternatively:
  • Type in the first filepath into Full path of file to delete box.
  • Click the Delete on Reboot and the All files button.
  • Now click on the red button with the white X.
  • You will be asked if you want to reboot, answer No.
  • Enter the next file path.
  • Continue until all files have been entered.
  • When last file has been entered answer Yes to the reboot question.
Your computer should now re-boot, if it doesn't then re-boot it manually.
Hi Gary,

Here are the two new logs. Tried to get rid of c:\documents and settings\gordon.gordon-mainpc\application data\errorsafeofferinstall[1].exe, but it keeps reapperaring.
When I followed the instructions with killbox I get this message: PendingFileRename Operations Registry Data has been removed by External Proccess!

Scan process completed.
Hi Kath,

I'm fairly certain the HJT entry is being kept in place by one of your defensive systems, but it's possible their may be some unseen process keeping it alive, so I'd like to run some more checks.

Download FileFind by Atribune.
  • Double click on FileFind.exe to open the programme.
  • Enter errorsafespecialofferinstall[1].exe into the File: box.
  • Click on the Search button.
  • After a while a list of file locations will appear in the List of Files: box.
  • Click on the Export button.
This will create a Notepad file named Export.txt located in the C:\ folder, copy and paste it to your next post please.

Let me know if no file is found.

Download Blacklight Beta
  • Accept agreement which takes you to download page.
  • Create a folder C:\Blacklight Beta.
  • Save the file to this folder.
  • Close all browser windows and any open programs/folders.
  • Double click blbeta.exe
  • Wait a few seconds…..
  • Check the I agree, then click Next.
  • Click scan.
  • Wait for scan to finish. (Do not use your computer while scan is in progress).
  • Once done; hit Next then Close.
  • Do NOT use this app to rename files! Sometimes there are legitimate hidden items.
  • A log file called fsbl***.txt (*** is numbers) will be found in your Blacklight Beta folder, copy it to your next post please.
Can you send me a Startup List please.

Creating a Startup List
  • Open HJT, and click on Config followed by Misc Tools.
  • Check List also minor sections (full) and List empty sections (complete) before clicking on Generate StartUpList log.
  • A window will open asking for permission to create a log, answer Yes.
  • Notepad will open a text file, Save it please. By default it will be named startuplist.txt and saved to your HJT folder.
Now can you send me the following logs please:
  • Export.txt
  • Blacklight log
  • Startup list
Hi Gary,

I bet you wished you'd never read my first log, or are all problems this hard to fix.
I don't know if this is relevent but recently [few weeks ago] we had to turn off WINDOWS AUTOMATIC UPDATES as it kept shutting down the computer.

Hi Kath,

Can't see anything obvious on your logs (there's a couple of items I'm consulting about), however there's a couple of things I'd like you to do.
  • Click Start > Run then type services.msc click OK.
  • This will bring up the Services window.
  • Scan down till you come to a service named Remote Registry.
  • Double click on it to open the Properties box.
  • Click the Stop button, then set the Startup type to Disabled, click OK.
  • Scan down/up till you find the service Security Center.
  • Double click on it to open the Properties box.
  • Click the Start button, then set the Startup type to Automatic, click OK.
  • Exit the Services window.
If you have reason for having your Registry remotely edited, then miss out the Remote Registry section.

I'd like you to do another scan for me please.

Download GMER and unzip it to your Desktop. (It will create a folder GMER)
  • Disconnect from the Internet, and close all running programmes.
  • There is a small chance this programme may crash your computer, so save any work you have open.
  • Open the GMER folder, and double click gmer.exe
  • Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at programme start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan ….. click OK.
  • If no warning:
    • Click Rootkit tab.
    • Ensure that All the boxes to the right of the program are checked except Show All.
    • Click Scan.
  • Once scan is finished click Copy.
    • Click Start > Run then type Notepad.exe then click OK.
    • This will open a Notepad file.
    • Hit Ctrl+V to paste log into it.
    • Save the log to your Desktop.
  • Reconnect to internet and post the log please, along with a new HJT log.
Hi Kath,

Seems it may be just a peculiarity of HJT that's preventing us from removing the 04 item, let's try another way to get rid of it.

First if you re-enabled Windows Defender, can you make sure it's disabled.

  • Click Start > Run type Notepad.exe then click OK.
  • This will open a Notepad file.
  • Copy the contents of the quote box below (include the blank line at the end), and paste them into the Notepad file.
  • Check that Wordwrap is unchecked in the Format menu.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\NI.ERS_9999_N91S2007]

  • Save as FixReg.reg to your Desktop.
  • Save as File type All Files or it won't work.
  • Double click on FixReg.reg to launch it, and allow it to merge with the registry when it asks.
Now run a new HJT scan and post me the log please.
Hi Gary,
Done as you requested, still seems to be there. Have done an AVG Antispyware scan this morning, and that shows improvment, found nothing which is a first.

Many thanks again for your assistance
