"…Java 6 was released after nearly 2 years of work in December. Many of the updates to Java involve improved security functionality and memory leak updates. A full list of updates is available*… it has been observed that the Java update installer does not clean up older revisions of the product. Any update / change control procedures need to take this into account and remove older versions once you are satisfied that it is safe to move forward…"

"The Java Platform has added support for the following Security functionality in version 6…"

Anybody else confused here? Which is the whicher? Standard Edition 6 (build 1.6.0-b105) or J2SE 5.0 (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 11) And which update should be recommended for the ordinary owner/user who is interested in updating to reduce vulnerabilities? Your comments to clarify will be appreciated. Doug

…ordinary owner/user who is interested in updating to reduce vulnerabilities?

Win98/Win98SE/WinME - v1.5.0_11 (If you attempt to install v1.6.0, you get message "Warning: This is not a supported Operating System")

WinXP - v1.6.0 …

Win2k - ??? (Dunno. 'Don't have a system with that platform available to test it.)

Above are -all- IMHO, since "they work for me". -YMMV- "…All information on this website is provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind. We disclaim any responsibility for the use of services and/or tools you may link to and/or use from this website. And, yes, we also feel the very "need" for disclaimers is an incredibly sad statement about our society…" Blah, blah, blah…

In all this, I have NOT come across -any- recommendation for reference from an established large, medium, or small organization, business, or institution, and I'll probably end up in one of the latter if this confusion continues.

Thank you AplusWebMaster. Guess I should have known that, but didn't, but do now. Thanks. And from one fellow or future resident of the aforementioned "institution", word to the wise: "When you get your lunch tray…….Don't eat the apricots". Doug
