Hi killiedel

You may want to go here and update Adobe Reader to the latest version.

Your Java is out of date Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says " Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

morning Dan, i cant find Updating Java: * Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6. * Scroll down to where it says " Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6". on the web link
after removing the java files, and rebooting windows, the start up tray icons did not appear. This was part of the original symptoms, it would take 4 or 5 reboots to get it to load.
Kaspersky online scanner is not working, nothing happen when i press the accept privacy statement. it says in blue that it will only work with MS Internet explorer 5.0 or higher. I am using Mozilla Firefox, is this the problem?
hi dan, had to restart the computer 5 times to try and get the icon tray to load. Would you recommend a complete reformat and start again? if so what progs should i download/ actions taken, to prevent me getting infected again?
hi Dan, thanks for all your work to date, just wondering how serious the threat to my computer is, as i do on-line banking and use paypal to pay for things. If the threat is serious and you dont think it can be fixed soon, should i bite the bullet and do a complete re-frormat? thanks Del

Hi killiedel

You have done a good job your logs have come back fine, just a little to tidy up on the kav log.
Apart from your taskbar issue, can you let me know how your machine is at this moment in time?

Well done in getting your scan.

Ok,can you delete the smitfraud folders and FixWareout, you downloaded at the begining for me which includes the zip folder also.
Now empty your recycle bin.

Open up spybot search and destroy, click on recovery then check mark items in bold, click second button on the right that says "purge selected Items"

SpywareBOT2.zip/Progress.exe
SpywareBOT2.zip ZIP

close program.

_____________

Your machine is now clean. Please take the time to read my closing speach to help guard against possible Infection in the future:

Re hide your system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Under the
    Hidden files
    folder, select
Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Check
    Hide protected operating system files.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

Stand up and be Counted.

NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.
[external image: Posted Image]
Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is ……………. please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agances that something will get done.

Hi killiedel

This I believe is not a malware related issue anymore.
It could be you have a failing hardrive!
we are moving into an area where by, I may not be able to give you the best advise you need.

See if the following helps:

Windows XP users
1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

Hi killiedel

It is important given that you have gone for a reformat, that you obtain all updates and install them immediately if not sooner.
Your fresh new install is extremely vulnerable until you have completely updated your machine.
A machine that's not updated with the latest Microsoft security updates and Service Packs, and the latest program updates for programs like QuickTime, Java, Adobe Reader, and Flash Player, is a machine that's going to become infested with malware
  • Immediately go here:
  • and get all the critical updates.
  • Don't forget to restart your computer!
  • Then update your AV and firewall.
Regards dan
