Hello,

My laptop, which shares the same Internet connection as my desktop, has become increasingly slow since my sister-in-law visited. Who knows what she's done – her computer is a mess, so I can only imagine! My laptop happens to be better equipped than the desktop in all aspects, so I can only assume that something malicious has found its way into the computer. Any help is appreciated.

Oh, and I have run BitDefender, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, HouseCall, etc. Cleaned a few things out, but nothing has really helped so far.

Without further adieu:

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

Not looking at anything earth shattering on your log, not to say something could be hidden and not showing up, lets do a few things and if nothing turns up than I can direct you to some windows support sites that deal with slow computers. You do have two anti virus programs running at the same time, not a good thing , this will really effect system performance and they are resource hogs. You have avast! and Symantec, your call but you need to uninstall one of them via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Hijackthis 1.99.1
Its important that Hijackthis is installed in its own permanent folder for backup purposes.
  • Go to where you currently have HJT installed and delete the whole folder.
  • Use the link above or the links in my signature to download HJT 1.99.1 setup to your desktop
  • Double Click on the Setup icon and by defaut it will unzip to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis
Then go to where you have HJT installed and right click on the HJT Icon ( Hijackthis.exe ) ( looks like a stick of dynamite with a plunger ) and rename it to Scanner.exe. The reason being is that there are infections being written to evade HJT.
  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Java website and download and install the update.
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you do an Online installation, it will install automatically.
  • If you do an Offline installation, you will have to save the setup file to your hard disk and run it. Your call.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to do an Offline Installation and save the setup file in case I need it in the future

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Run this free online virus scanner from Panda, it may pick up some bad entires that are not showing up on your HJT log. It's important that I see the log so copy and paste it into your next reply.
Panda ActiveScan <—-Accept default settings

I need to see the Panda Report and a new HJT log after you have renamed it.
Thanks Ken! I can only imagine how busy this forum must be, in addition to your personal life stuff, but you're doing a great service!

Okay, here is the HJT log:

Just noticed some adult-sounding stuff in there. I do occasionally visit consumptionjunction.com, which is a variety site with adult-themed banner ads. Is this an unsafe site to visit even without clicking on the banners?

Thanks again Ken!
ramblux :D

Still not looking at anything bad, and all Panda found where cookies.

As far as the site with the adult banner ads, those sites not always but most times bring trouble with them, myself, I would suggest staying out of those sites.
