Hello-

I am attempting to help a friend of mine clean up his daughters laptop. I am fairly sure that thre are at least a few trojans and or some malware slowing it down and keeping it from connecting to the net. The laptop itself runs pretty slow, and I can't seem to connect to the net at all. Whenever I try to connect, it redirects to a garbled up string for a site address. Any help that you can offer would be GREATLY appreciated!

Hi! Welcome to the Tom Coyote forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
My posts to you will be checked by one of the Forum Admins, so my replies may take a little longer.
Hi dime420

We need to stop some malicious Services
  • Click "Start" button then select "Run"
  • Type services.msc then hit OK
  • Scroll down and find the service called.

    ieupdater21 (Microsoft IEUpdater21)
  • Right-click on Service and choose "Properties"
  • On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service
  • Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled"
  • Click Apply then OK
  • Repeat steps 3-7 for each of the following services:

    Viewpoint Manager Service
.NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service)
  • When all of the above are taken care of, exit the Services utility

End malicious processes: (if they are present)
  • Press the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys simultaneously to open Task Manager
  • Click on the Processes tab to show running processes
  • Find ViewpointService.exe and click on it
  • Click End Process
  • Repeat steps 4 & 5 for each of the following processes: (if present)
  • wdskctl.exe
  • AutoUpdate.exe
  • 1iFNOv.exe
  • gOhgkog.exe
  • ViewMgr.exe
6.Close Task Manager

Download and run Sysclean
  • Create a folder on your desktop called Sysclean.
  • Go to http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp and download sysclean package to the folder you made.
  • Go to http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp and download the Virus Pattern File (Official Pattern Release) to your desktop.
This file will be called lptXXX.zip (XXX represents the version number)
  • Unzip lptXXX.zip and you'll get the file lpt$vpn.XXX. Read here how to unzip/extract properly.
  • Move the lpt$vpn.XXX to the Sysclean-folder you created on your desktop.
  • Open the sysclean-folder and doubleclick sysclean.com.
  • Check: "Automatically clean or delete detected files".
  • Click scan.
Open your sysclean-folder and copy and paste the contents of sysclean.log in your next reply.

Download this removal tool

IEPlugin Removal Tool

Press Run and when the download is complete press Run again, then wait for it to finish.

Post back with the Sysclean log and a new HijackThis log.
OK. All done. Here are the results:

Again, thanks for all the help!
Hi dime420

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
You have a suspicious file that Id like more information on. Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org, click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\gOhgkog.exe

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If Jotti is too busy you can try these.

Hello again. I ran SDFix and HijackThis and have the reports for you. However, I couldn't find the file 'gOhgkog.exe' in the location you specified. (C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\gOhgkog.exe) I tried looking at the hidden files too, but no luck. Anywho, I did a search for the file, and found 2 close matches:

gOhgkog.exe-09B842DC.pf in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
gOhgkog.exe-1B23FFC6.pf in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch

Would these be the file(s) you are looking for? I'm not sure, so I didn't upload and scan them just yet. Just let me know.

Here are the log files you requested:

Hope this helps, and let me know about the gOhgkog.exe files. By the way, I was going to mention that I am downloading and transfering files back and forth between the infected laptop (not connected to the net), and my home computer. Is there any risk of infecting my home computer, say, if I would copy the gOhgkog.exe files and upload them from my home PC? Just wondering.

Thanks!
Hi dime420

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Reboot into SAFE MODEBy pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer
beep when you reboot it (some versions of windows will display 'Starting Windows' with a grey progress bar)
you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.

If it does not work on the first try, reboot and try again, as you have to be quick when you press it.

I have found that during boot up, right after the computer displays the equipment , memory, etc
installed on your computer, if you start lightly tapping the F8 key, the system will usually display the menu.

Remove programs from Add/Remove Programs List

Alright, all done. Except I could not delete the file TVMedia. I kept getting an error message saying that it was unable to delete, and that the program was being used by another person or program. Hmmm……

Hi dime420

Download and Run ComboFix
  • Download this file from either of the two below listed places :

    Here
    or
    Here
  • Then double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Hi again dime420,

Instead of running Combofix, as suggested above, we have another tool for you to use.

Download Microsofts TVMedia Removal Tool.

Click on Run to download then Run again and accept the EULA. When it is finished, you will recieve a message. Put that in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
OK. I downloaded and ran the TVMedia Removal tool, but all it said was: TVMedia is not installed..

Anyway, here is the new HijackThis log:

Thanks for all the help!
Hi dime

Launch Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories), and copy/paste all the Quoted REGEDIT below to it. Don't forget to include REGEDIT4.
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: * files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\runonce\TV Media]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\runonce\TV Media]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\6C]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\System Soap Pro]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\t27T32h]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\TV Media]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\WildTangent CDA]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: [external image: Posted Image]
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Delete these Files if listed:
C:\WINDOWS\zu.exe
C:\WINDOWS\tr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dgflib.dll

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
