Please help me i've tried everything and still keep being redirected to these sites such as gathi.com, jupk.com and fast-dir.com. I've got spybot and avg anti spyware but they haven't helped in the slightest. Please take a look at my HijackThis log:

Hi.

First we need tp disable Windows Defender's real-time protection as it may interfere with our fix..
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click on "Tools"
  • Click on "General Settings"
  • Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
  • Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
  • Click "Save"
  • Exit the program.

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

———————————————————-

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install. Make sure that Run fixit is checked and then click Finish. The fix will begin - follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer. Please do so (your system may take longer than usual to load - this is normal).

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

———————————————————–

Next, click on Start, then Run, type cmd and click OK. A command prompt (black window) will open.
Type ipconfig /flushdns (that space between g and / is needed)
Hit the Enter key, type exit then hit Enter again.

Now lets check some settings on your system.

Click on Start and then Control Panel.
If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double-click on Network Connections.
Then right-click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection, and left-click on Properties. Click the Networking tab.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.

oh dear one of those 17's is back
Thanks so much for your help I'm just off to check the rest of the internet is working!
Hi catherine_666.

Your HijackThis log is clean. :) Check "the rest of the internet" but be careful which websites you visit. Avoid online gaming and poker sites.

The O17 line refers to Energis UK/Cable & Wireless. Please let me know if this is not your ISP.

I would like you to do an online scan to make sure that everything is OK.

Kaspersky Online Scanner

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click 'Yes'.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
  • Now click on 'Scan Settings'
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
    • Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
  • Click 'OK'
  • Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Hi, my isp is orange (formerly wanadoo), not cable and wireless! Also, when I tried to do the Kaspersky scan, I got as far as the little window with 'Accept' or 'Decline'-pressed Accept, which took me to another window that told me it wanted to download some Active X controls. I clicked yes, but instead it just took me back to the previous window telling me all about the online scanner, but this time without the 'accept' or 'decline' buttons. I don't know why it won't work, i haven't got any previous versions installed and i'm sure i didn't miss anything. Thanks again for your time
The Kaspersky online scanner is not yet fully compatible with IE7. Please go back and try again. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Sorry about that. I saw that you have IE7 and should have warned you about this.

Please post the Kaspersky report. In the meantime, I will check into the issue with the O17 line and your ISP.
Ok thanks for that here is the Kaspersky report but it's way too long and it wouldn't let me post it but this bit is ok, isn't it?

Hi.

Thanks for the reports. The Kaspersky reports can get a bit long. As nothing was found, I don't need to see the rest of it. The HijackThis log is still clean. I've checked into that 'O17' line. There must be some sort of tie-in between Energis/Cable & Wireless and Orange. The IP address is registered to Energis but I found this link that clearly show that this is Orange's DNS server. So, no problem! :) You can delete FixWareout and its report (C:\fixwareout\report.txt). I suggest that you keep ATF Cleaner and use it regularly.

Yay! Thanks for checking all that stuff out, and I'll continue to use the ATF cleaner and I'll flush System Restore. Thank you again so much for helping me with this problem, otherwise I don't know what I would have done, since spybot and avg clearly weren't up to the job! :) I don't go on any dodgy gaming sites or anything, but I don't know what my older brother gets up to on there. <_< Apart from forcefully stopping him visiting rogue sites, what other measures can i take to ensure this nightmare doesn't happen again? I've got a Windows firewall, I just installed Spywareblaster yesterday and have an anti-virus and spybot. Much appreciated.
Your computer was infected with Wareout. There has been a huge surge in cases of this in the last few days. I'm not sure which site, or sites, this is coming from but the finger does point at online gaming and, in particular, poker sites. Apart from one issue, which I will cover later, you have good security. The problem is that a lot of these infections are downloaded by clicking on links and/or adverts on these sites. If you agree to download something, your security software is effectively bypassed. If they were kind enough to have a message box saying, for example, "Do you want to download this malicious program that could destroy your system" it would be far simpler! The main thing is not to click on anything unless you are sure what you are agreeing to. Have a look here for some good advice.

You are using Windows XP Firewall. This is better than nothing, but it only protects against incoming traffic. It doesn't protect you against outgoing baddies trying to "phone home". I strongly suggest that you use one of the third-party ones. Sunbelt Kerio and Zone Alarm are both good and have a free version. I cannot stress how important it is that you use a firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a firewall in its default configuration can greatly lower your risk.

Spybot S&D and SpywareBlaster are both very good programs. Make sure that you keep them updated and always use the "Immunize" feature in Spybot after updating. I also suggest that you look at McAfee SiteAdvisor and Firetrust Sitehound. These both give warnings when you are about to enter a website that is on their 'block' list. I use Sitehound, but both have a good reputation (N.B. use only one of them, not both).

Best of luck and safe surfing!
