Hi, this is my first time on this forum.

Today, i noticed that when i was going to certain websites (my Tiscali homepage, Google, Ebay…) my browser was being redirected to jupk.com/…

I have run Norton Antivirus which found nothing and Windows Defender which found the following viruses:

Trojanclicker.win32/small.go
Java/openconnection.p
Java/openconnection.q
Exploit.win32/wmfap

I am not sure whether the viruses and internet probelms are linked. Windows Defender recommended that i remove Trojanclicker.win32/small.go, Java/openconnection.p, Java/openconnection.q, and quarantine Exploit.win32/wmfap, which i did.

I was still being redirected to jupk.com, but after i updated to Internet Explorer 7 (from IE 6), i am now being redirected to bxnu.com/…

I have included a HijackThis log below. Thanks for any help.

Hi,

We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
* Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
* Click on Tools, General Settings
* Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
* Click Save

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Please follow these instructions in the order given.

• Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [_WinProc] C:\WINDOWS\winfast.exe
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{7C02DEC0-38F4-4926-A1AC-E84C8D979961}: NameServer = 85.255.115.5,85.255.112.25

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

• You have an outdated version of Java which, because of security reasons, needs to be updated. To update Java:
- Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9 and save it to your Desktop.
- Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
- Click the "Download" button to the right.
- Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
- The page will refresh.
- Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
- Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
- Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the [external image: Posted Image] icon next to it.
- Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
- Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
- Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
- Then from your Desktop, double-click on the downloaded Java file to install the newest version.

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
• Download and scan with AVG Anti-Spyware v7.5
(This is Ewdio 4.0 renamed. If you already have Ewido installed, please update to this version which has a special "clean driver" for removing persistent malware)
1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
7. Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
8. Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
  • Press "OK".
  • Click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find AVG Anti-Spyware guard.
  • When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
  • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
  • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
  • Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
9. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update succesfull message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the
AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from here.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
1. Click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
  • Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
  • Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
  • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions?" button.

5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
6. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done and submit the log report in your next response.

Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

Note: If AVG Anti-Spyware "crashes" or "hangs" during the scan, try scanning again by doing this:
1. Scan one sector of the system at a time by using the "Custom Scan" feature. To do this select Scanner > Custom Scan and click on Add drive/directory/file. Browse to C:\Windows > System, add this folder to the list and click on "Start Scan". When the scan is complete, repeat the Custom Scan but this time, browse to and add the System32 folder. Then keep repeating this procedure until all your folders have been scanned. Make sure you include the Documents & Settings folder.

2. If this still does not help, then turn the ADS scanner off while making a Custom Scan. To do this select Scanner > Scan Settings and untick "Scan in NTFS Alternate Data Streams". Then repeat the steps above for performing a Custom Scan.

• Download and save F-Secure Blacklight to your desktop.
http://www.europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/blbeta.exe
- Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
- Click Scan -> then Next
- You will see a list of all items found.
- Don't choose rename yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present there…like "wbemtest.exe".
- There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
- Post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Note: If you downloaded Blacklight to your desktop, just double-click to run from there and it will create the "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" on your desktop.

• Post back with the AVG Anti-Spyware log, the Blacklight log and a new HijackThis log.
Thanks for your help  , i did everything you said but downloaded JRE 5.0 update 10 instead of JRE 5.0 update 9. Here are the new logs:

Hi,

That's fine about Java. I didn't know that a version 10 had been released. It must be brand new, so I downloaded it myself to install.

Please do the following.

Please go to Start > Control Panel, and choose "Network Connections". Then right-click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on "Properties". Double-click on the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" item and select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically". Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

[*]Please click Start > Run > and type Regedit

[*]Click OK and wait for the Registry Editor to open

[*]Now, please click on File and then Export

[*]This will bring up the Export Registry File window

[*]At the bottom of which you will see an option for Export range

[*]Click the option for Selected branch and in the field underneath that, copy and paste:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
[*]Enter a file name of Winlogon, and save the file to your Desktop

[*]Now go to your Desktop, right click on the file you have created, select Open With and choose Notepad.
  • Please click Start > Run > and type Regedit
  • Click OK and wait for the Registry Editor to open
  • Now, please click on File and then Export
  • This will bring up the Export Registry File window
  • At the bottom of which you will see an option for Export range
  • Click the option for Selected branch and in the field underneath that, copy and paste:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
  • Enter a file name of Run, and save the file to your Desktop
  • Now go to your Desktop, right click on the file you have created, select Open With and choose Notepad.
Finally, run FixWareout again. Make sure you are connected to the Internet when you run the tool.

Now please copy the contents of both files and the log from FixWareout into your next reply.
Thanks again, i have posted the three logs below.

Hi, • Please go to Start > Control Panel > choose "Network Connections" - Right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up - Click on "Properties" - Double-click on the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" item > select the radio button that says "Obtain DNS servers automatically" - Click OK twice, and restart your computer. • Post back with a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know how your computer running now.
I made changes to the network connection before, but i was not sure which was my defult connection so i just chose the only one that i have connected at the moment (Tiscali broadband).

Here is the network connections that i have:

[external image: Posted Image]

I have changed the setting on Tiscali Broadband before my last post, do i have to change it on any other connections before posting a new HijackThis log?

P.s. My browser is no longer being directed and my computer seems to be running much better now, how do my logs look so far?
That's fine. The Tiscali Broadband is your default connection, so go ahead and post the HijackThis log and I'll answer your second question. :)
Thanks for your quick replies  , here is the new HijackThis log:

Hi,

Your log looks clean.

• If you have not done so, please empty your Recycle Bin.

• Create a new Restore Point:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
- When the utility opens, select "Create a new restore point" and click Next
- Name the restore point - something like "After infection cleaned" or "After cleaning"
- Click Create.

• Delete the old Restore Points:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup. Click Ok.
- Click the "More Options" tab.
- Where it states "System Restore" - click Clean up.
- All of the old Restore Points will be deleted EXCEPT for the one you just created.

Reboot your computer.

• To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

• Install Spywareblaster. SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for so-called spyware but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage. Update it periodically.

* Avoid illegal sites because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside pop-ups. If you should get them, use ALT + F4 to close them.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software because most of these so-called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

• Let your anti-spyware scanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before scanning.

• I suggest you perform an online virus-scan once in a while (Housecall and/or Bitdefender) because what one virus-scanner can't find, another one maybe can.
Also, make sure that your virus-scanner, the one that is already installed on your system, is always up to date!

• Make sure your Windows has the latest updates by going here.

• More information on how to prevent malware can be found at So how did I get infected in the first place? (by Tony Klein) and Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection.

Happy surfing again! :)
Created a new restore point yesterday (and did all the other things you said).

Thanks very much for all your help and advice
Glad I could help. :)
