Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 9:41:57 AM, on 12/1/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) I have a backup program I set up to bakup users Outlook files. One of my users has recently been getting the message "The process cannot access the file becaue another process has locked a portion of the file" when it gets to the actual .pst file. This is to be expeced if Outlook is open but it is not. The first thing my backup program does is close Outlook. I can't see any other program or process that would have a need to use this file. I have a complete Hijackthis log file if that would help. Thanks

That error only indication you can get that a .pst file is still in use. At that point, you might want to open computer management and connect to the server or pc (if remotely) that the .pst file resides on, then expand "Shared Folders" and click on "Open Files". On the right side it will tell you what's open and who has it open.

Is the backup program custom-written?

The backup program is just a batch file that copies the .pst file to another location after it closes Outlook. So even if I try to copy it manually this occurs. The .pst file is on the local computer. When I open Outlook on mine and do what you said with manage shared folders it doesn't show any files open since those aren't shared. Something other than Outlook has it but I don't know what. The KB article talks about a moved file. Actually this file was moved and put back due to a hard disk failure and it has seemed locked since. I'm not sure how to unlock it though.

Hi Rstoner,

Couple of thoughts:

Norton has been known to lock/block copy of .pst.

if Norton is on your machine, consider:
(disconnect from the internet first)
Right click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the system tray.
Click Disable Auto-Protect.

(some Firewalls may also cause a similar problem)

If the above doesn't apply to you, or trying the recommendation doesn't help..........

Consider re-boot into SAFE Mode (operating in SAFE Mode "turns off" most applications and may turn off the one that is locking your .pst files.

It will tell you which application has your .pst attached, and give you options for releaseing the lock.

Edit: Do you have "indexing services" active? If so, consider turning off "indexing"
You've probably already determined that no Malware Scan is currently running when you attempt the backup?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I will have to check to see if a firewall might have been enabled. I will try disabling the anti-virus software and try working in safe mode as well. My batch file copies everything in the users Outlook directory and everything copys until it gets to his main pst file. I will also have a look at the tool you linked to dough if I can't get any further with it. Thanks again for the suggestions. Rob

I used the unlocker tool dough linked and found that C:\Windows\Explorer.exe has five locks on the Outlook.pst file. After unlocking it, it can be successfully backed up but I'm having trouble figuring out why explorer has a lock on it in the first place. The explorer.exe file appears to be a legitimate file and is in the correct location.

Check to see if the owner/user has "auto-Archive" enabled. Archive "compresses" email files but still allows them to be available via Outlook GUI user folders options. That process probably involves "Explorer.exe", but I've never investigated, so my comment is shear speculation. The multiple instances of explorer.exe, may also refer to a few of you prior failed batch run attempts. Seems like it will be interesting to see if you encounter anything similar the next time you perform this operation. Glad you got it completed this time. Best Regards

I'm finding out more about this problem but I am no closer to solving it. I can unlock the outlook.pst file using the program dough linked. Every time I go to Internet Options and push the OK button, a lock from explorer.exe appears on the outlook.pst file. If I do it three times, three locks appear. There is also an icon in control panel that is a picture of something but has no title and doesn't appear to do anything when it is run. I have a feeling this icon and this problem may be related. Ad-aware found only 2 cookies when I ran it so the machine otherwise seems fairly clean.

Hi Rstoner, Will you please run "Generate Startup List" from your HJT, "open misc tools section"? Post the list here in this thread. Lets have a look to see if we can determine what that program is. If HJT StartUp list doesn't show it, then we'll go to SysInternals - AutoRuns to get more detailed info. Best Regards

Here it is. This computer is now acting funny in anohter way. It will not work to click on icons for 10 to 15 minutes at a time then it will work again. This is becomming very strange.

Thank you Rstoner, As you can see for yourself, the generated StartUp List is quite extensive. (It is for any machine.) Nevertheless, it runs 24 pages and is going to take me a while to read through for detail. I wonder if you identify the startup item that you previously mentioned. If it's a simple startup (and was listed in MSCONFIG - StartUp(tab)) then it should appear in the first three segments of your HJT Startup List under: Running Processes, List of Startup folders, or AutoRun entries from Registry. You may be able to pick it out faster than I can read 24 pages. If you do, please let me know. I will read the entire 24 pages for detail in hopes of finding any items that shouldn't be there. And then I'll report back to you. Unfortunately, I have to be away from my desk for about the next 3 hours, so will pick up on this work again in the early evening. If you do find anything that causes you to be concerned about an "unwanted" installation or any malware, then please take whatever intitiative you prefer to either (1) run a few online scans, (2) post a HJT for expert analysis. I'm not sure what startup program you are refering to dough. I'm a beginner at going through hijackthis log files. The one from this machine seems OK to me but I can post it when I am back to work. I have a feeling this is something the user installed causing this. The answer when I ask the question "have you installed anything new since this behavior started" is of course, no. Why opening Internet Options and pushing OK causes explorer to lock the Outlook.pst file tells me something is there that wasn't before. How to tell what, I'm not sure. As I think about it, I will connect to my computer remotely and post the log file for you. It is much shorter than the startup log. Thanks, Rob

Just a FYI,
The HJT log looks clean

Wouldn't hurt to update Java though.

You need to update SunJava.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10.

• Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".

• Click the "Download" button to the right.

• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".

• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.

• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.

• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.

• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the icon next to it.

• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

I know you to be a "seasoned campaigner" and almost certainly you will have Googled extensively for information on what exactly is locking your file.

I have only come across this problem once before and the solution was in creating a new user profile & renaming the outlook.pst file (taking all the usual precautions)
