Hi.

You have some items in the log that relate to PartyPoker. Poker sites are well-known for infecting their visitors with all kinds of malware. PartyPoker, I believe, is one of the more reputable. However, I have just spent a considerable amount of time cleaning somebody's computer of the same infection that you have. He kept getting re-infected and PartyPoker was one of the sites he visited. The choice is yours, but I would recommend that you uninstall it. If you wish to do so:

Please go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and uninstall PartPoker (or similar).

———————————————————————

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

If you have decided to uninstall PartyPoker, please also tick these two lines, if present:
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming.Net\PartyPokerNet\RunPF.exe (file missing)

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is… click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.

  • You will need to search for the following files and delete them. They will possibly be in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\ folder. Please let me know if there are any you can't find:
  • barint.exe
  • BoundRec.exe
  • defect08.exe
  • media64.exe
  • systemdll.dll <– Be careful with the name of this one!
—————————————————————

Please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • The AVG Anti-Spyware report
  • A new HijackThis log
Please also let me know whether you uninstalled PartyPoker and whether you found and deleted all of the files.
Hi again. Thanks again for all this. I couldn't find the 4 exe and 1 dll files that you told me to delete from C:\WINDOWS\system32\. Although I did find and delete the PartyPokerNet folder, and yes, I uninstalled PartyPoker. One other thing, when the AVG Anti-Spyware scan finished I clicked Apply all Actions without making sure "Set all elements to:" was set to Quarantine. Instead, it was set to Custom, which deleted all the cookies but quarantined the rest. Is this a problem? Anyway, here's the new HijackThis log followed by the AVG Anti-Spyware report:

Hi.

Your HijackThis log is clean. :)

Don't worry about the files that I asked you to delete. HijackThis should have deleted them. I think that you are wise to remove PartyPoker. This infection has suddenly become very prevalent. It looks as if a popular, and previously safe, site has become infected. If you enjoy online poker, I suggest that you have a look at PokerStars. I have been advised that this is regarded as safe. Here are the linksI can't make any personal recommendations as I have no experience of online poker sites. The decision must be yours!

——————————————————————-

Kaspersky Online Scanner

I would like you to do an online scan to make sure that everything is OK.

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click 'Yes'.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
  • Now click on 'Scan Settings'
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
    • Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
  • Click 'OK'
  • Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Hi. I've done the online scan. It says my computer is infected. Anyway, here's the report, followed by a new HijackThis log. Many thanks.

Hi.

Your computer is now clean. :) The two items that Kaspersky found are in System Restore points. We'll clear this later. First, a bit of tidying up. You can delete FixWareout and its report (C:\fixwareout\report.txt). I suggest that you keep AVG Anti-Spyware and ATF Cleaner and use them regularly. Make sure that you keep AVG Anti-Spyware updated.

For safety, you need to re-hide your system files:
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View tab
  • Advanced Settings: Under Hidden files and folders, check Do not show hidden files and folders
  • Select the Hide extensions for known file types option
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) option
  • Click Apply to All Folders
  • Click Yes
  • Click OK

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 10.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Flush System Restore

This will get rid of the two items found by Kaspersky.

Turn OFF System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click[Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Check Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click[Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Uncheck Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
This will set a new, clean restore point.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Otherwise we can close this.
Thanks so much! Yes, I do have a question. The AVG AntiSpyware I downloaded is just a trial version which expires in about 30 days. Should I purchase this software? I do have anti-virus and anti-spyware software that's provided by my internet provider (SBC Yahoo! Online Protection - USA). Is this software adequate?
AVG Anti-Spyware is a trial version. When the trial period is over, you lose the Resident Shield feature. This gives you real-time protection, but your current software should cover this. The only other difference is that you don't get automatic updates. You can, however, update the program manually. Other than that, the program will continue to function. The decision is yours, but I would suggest that you retain the free version and scan regularly. Make sure that you keep it updated.

Does SBC Yahoo! Online Protection - USA provide a firewall? I cannot see one in your HijackThis log. If it doesn't, are you using Windows XP Firewall? If not, I suggest that you switch it on immediately. Windows XP Firewall is better than nothing, but it only protects against incoming traffic. It doesn't protect you against outgoing baddies trying to "phone home". I strongly suggest that you use one of the third-party ones. Sunbelt Kerio and Zone Alarm are both good and have a free version. I cannot stress how important it is that you use a firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a firewall in its default configuration can greatly lower your risk.

If they are not already present, I would recommend that you download and install some, or all, of the following programs (all free):
  • Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy. This will provide spyware and hijacker protection on your computer, alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti-virus program. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Instructions for Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal - Download and install Ad-Aware SE Personal. You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti-virus program in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Instructions for Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware
  • SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and websites into your Internet Explorer and/or Firefox browser settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here: Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
I also suggest that you look at McAfee SiteAdvisor and Firetrust Sitehound. These both give warnings when you are about to enter a website that is on their 'block' list. I use Sitehound, but both have a good reputation (N.B. use only one of them, not both).

I hope that you have found this helpful. Good luck and safe surfing! :)
