Hello,
My IE is being redirected to a strange website www.jupk.com. This redirects most website requests eg, google, msn etc whether they come from the bookmark list or are manually typed in.
I have recently upgraded IE to ver 7.0.5730.11
I run security software; Norton Internet Security 2006, Spyware Guard, Spyware blaster, Spybot, Ad-Aware, and Windows Defender(beta2).
I have followed the istructions in 'Selfhelp fixes for Slyware' but the problem persists.
I hope someone can help.

Also at start up I get a warning that Gearsec has encountered a problem. I click dont send and the computer works just fine.

Below are the HJT log and the Avgas report.

You helped me once before and I've had no problems since, until now. Is there a problem with the IE upgrade.

Thank you

Hi There,
Thanks for the prompt reply.
I have followed your instructions. I have used Fixwearout and atfcleaner.
I have run Hijackthis (report below)
I can now access Google and msn without strange websites appearing. Also my email is working as well.
I am still getting an error message about gearsec.exe.

Thank you

I am still getting an error message about gearsec.exe.

Looks like that is GEARSecurity
Software. You may need to re-install it.

Did you have eTrust Antivirus by Computer Associates International, Inc. - at one time?
Hello I will try to find Gearsecurity and re install but it doesnt ring any bells, maybe it came with the computer. Yes I used to use eTrust antivirus as it came preinstalled on the computer. I disabled it when I install Norton Internet security. Thnk you John1701
1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
eTrust Antivirus

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AntivirusRegistration] C:\Program Files\CA\Etrust Antivirus\Register.exe
O23 - Service: eTrust Antivirus RPC Server (InoRPC) - Computer Associates International, Inc. - C:\Program Files\CA\eTrust Antivirus\InoRpc.exe
O23 - Service: eTrust Antivirus Realtime Server (InoRT) - Computer Associates International, Inc. - C:\Program Files\CA\eTrust Antivirus\InoRT.exe
O23 - Service: eTrust Antivirus Job Server (InoTask) - Computer Associates International, Inc. - C:\Program Files\CA\eTrust Antivirus\InoTask.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.
Hi,
Completed removal of eTrust antivirus and removed item 04 but there were no items in the 023 range.
New Hijackthis log is below.

Thanks

Good Job

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.
IE Spyads
They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Hi, Done that all seems to be well. Thank you very much. One or three questions; 1. I run a number of programs eg. Adaware, spybot, Windows Defender, Spyware Balster, spyware Guard as well as Norton Internet Security (fire wall and anitivirus). How many antivirus and firewalls can I run, I thought it was only one of each? 2. Should I now post a final HJT log in to the resolved forum. 3. There seems to be alot of people with a JUPK problem on the forum. Was this problem connected with my upgrade to IE7 or was it just a coincidence. Again Thank you John 1701

1. I run a number of programs eg. Adaware, spybot, Windows Defender, Spyware Balster, spyware Guard as well as Norton Internet Security (fire wall and anitivirus). How many antivirus and firewalls can I run, I thought it was only one of each?

Only 1 Anti-Virus and Firewall

2. Should I now post a final HJT log in to the resolved forum.

Sure

3. There seems to be alot of people with a JUPK problem on the forum. Was this problem connected with my upgrade to IE7 or was it just a coincidence.

It had nothing to do with IE7. It's just another new nasty infection from the bad guys. Some are going away easy and others are not, but we're killing them
hi there,

All problems resolved
HJT Log Below
Cannot access the resolved forum as it is read only
