Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 11:56:32 HRS, on 11/26/2006
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)
I use Firefox as my browser… It matches my "Gotta give it a tweak" personality. That and I've had such bad luck with all of the Internet Explorer's.

So here's the situation:

I was scanning a file for viruses and bumped the "enter" key. I immediately blurted out a few explicatives for my stupidity. All the while Zone Alarm and Symantec both were scolding me. But I think (hoping really) that the infection process was stopped before it could complete. I say this because Symantec captured two of the files and deleted them. (I can't tell you anything about them as they have been deleted).

I found two others in the Zone Alarm program control listings. I immediately killed the processes for the both of them. They have since been deleted. They were: ishost.exe and ismini.exe.

Now here's the rub. There were three other files created in the process.

They are:

rsvut.ini - Constantly regenerates itself

tuvsr.dll - Cannot unregister, delete, delete at startup, or in safe mode

wintoi32.dll - Cannot unregister, delete, delete at startup, or in safe mode

I've been a day and a half searching for anything on these three. It seems that there's not much information on them.

There is only one obscure reference (in French) about rsvut.ini It appears to be a dialer.

tusvr.dll seems to be a trojan or worm. Information is scarce on this one as well.

wintoi32.dll From what I can tell is a virus downloader.

Symantec, ZoneLabs, and all the major Antivirus sites show nothing about these three on their pages.

So far I have scanned with my (updated daily) Symantec Antivirus, AdAware (with new definitions) SmitfraudFix, Ewido Micro, KillBox, and VundoFix.

Ewido found some tracking cookies and one instance of an entry into my system restore, nothing else. VundoFix found and deleted the ishost.exe and ismini.exe files, and nothing else. AdAware and Symantec don't recognize or identify these other three: (rsvut.ini, tuvsr.dll, wintoi32.dll) as a problem:

SmitfraudFix found no problems/threats as well.

KillBox gives you the opportunity to tell it what files to kill and delete on a startup/reboot. But… it can't seem to get rid of these three.

I have looked for instances of all three of these in my registry and deleted them. And again tried to kill and delete them on startup/reboot [and] in safe mode to no avail. Only to have them return to the registry.

Rub #2: There's no reference of any of these files in my HijackThis log.

So I'm back to the subject of this post… "I'm 'At A Loss!"

Anybody up for a good puzzle? Because this one sure has me stumped!

[ANY] help or at least a shove in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

Blather…
Welcome to TomCoyote!!!! :wavey: My name is sjpritch25 and i will be helping you today. Please be patient because i am still in training and my posts have to be approved. thanks.
Thanks sjpritch25,

Patients is all I have right now. I've been digging around in the Component Services / Application / Event Properties Log / and found an event pertaining to HijackThis and the tuvsr.dll.

Weather it has any bearing on this or not… My thoughts are… "The more information the better"!

Here's are the "Event Properties":

Faulting application hijackthis.exe, version 1.98.0.2, faulting module tuvsr.dll, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00035661.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Maybe this is why Hijackthis hasn't included it in the log.

Just a thought.

It would have been easier to put up a small jpg screencap, but as of yet I can't figure out how to do that.

Blather_X, Vundofix is updated very frequently, so i think we need to download a fresh copy. Before we do that, i need you to rename hijackthis.exe to hjt.exe and post a fresh Hijackthis log. Thanks.
Well, It appears that the renaming made quite a difference. There were only 10-15 lines in the original…

Lets look a little deeper. I need to find all the Vundo Trojan related files

Download WinPFind
Extract it to your C:\ folder.
A folder will be created called WinPFind.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
Open the Folder called WinPFind and double click on WinPFind.exe.
  • Click "Configure scan options"
  • Under "Run Addons" select the following:
    • Policies.def
    • Security.def
  • Click "Apply"
Once the program is launched, click on Start Scan button. WinPFind can sometimes take upwards of 30 minutes because its scanning a large amount of files.

When the scan has completed, Click on Copy to Clipboard button. In your next reply, post the results.
Here's the results from WinPFind:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding…" you can ignore it. Windows sometimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

If you want to clean your cookies, history, and list of recent files run you may check those boxes as well.

Then,,

Check on the Button titled "Delete Selected Temp Files"

Exit by clicking the Button titled "Exit(Save Settings)"

Once back into the main killbox program.

Check the following boxes:

Delete on Reboot

Highlight all the entries in the quote box below and then Copy them.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wintoi32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rsvut.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tuvsr.dll

Then in killbox click File>>Paste from Clipboard

At this point the "All Files" button should be enabled so you can click it.

Click the "All Files" button.

Then click the Red X …and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes

A second message will ask to Reboot now? you will need to click Yes to allow the reboot.

Note: Killbox will let you know if a file does not exist.

If you have any issues with this method you can copy and paste the lines one at a time into the killbox top box. Then click the "Single File" button. Then click the Red X …and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes. A second message will ask to Reboot now? you will need to click No until the last one at which time you click yes to allow the reboot

In your next reply, please include a fresh HIjackthis log. Thanks.
Well… Good news and bad news.

We seemed to have rid ourselves of wintoi32.dll but the other two: tuvsr.dll and rsvut.ini have remained. And there's been another another twist in the works. It seems that rsvut.ini has made a backup of itself after the kilbox action: "rsvut.bak1"

Also it seems that Killbox was having trouble with something as it couldn't complete the process. Here's the error message that it gave after the "are you sure you want to re-boot" countdown:

"PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!"

So I tried again, checking the "Unregister dll before deleting" box seemed to let Killbox complete it's job. But after the re-boot it seems to have had no effect other than to delete wintoi32.dll.

The odd thing is that tuvsr.dll and rsvut.ini [and] now the rsvut.bak1 are definately in my system32 folder but didn't show up in the hijackthis log??

Scratching my head… on this one. There has got to be something in the registry that we're overlooking.

Here's the Hijackthis log after "FixChecked" in hijack this, and the killbox action:

After this disappointment I decided to run VundoFix again. This time it found the three remaining files: tuvsr.dll, rsvut.ini & rsvut.bak1. It appears to have deleted them! (holding my breath)

I then did a reg search for all three, and found only one instance of tuvsr.dll. I vaporised it as well.

I'll reboot one more time and give it a look-see.

I guess I should ask…. OK what now?
Here's my latest…

Just a few things to clean up!!!!! Otherwise, everything looks good

Run HijackThis, and press "Do a System Scan Only".
1. When the scan is complete place a check mark next to the following entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D041BDCC-6B39-47F8-A60B-F3E3C8BBDE4A} - (no file)

2. After checking these items CLOSE ALL open windows EXCEPT HijackThis and click "Fix Checked." Then, reboot your computer…

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

========================================

Now that your system is clean you should SET A NEW RESTORE POINT to prevent future reinfection from the old restore point AFTER cleaning your system of any malware infection. Any trojans or spyware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore and are waiting to re-infect you. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete files, trapping viruses inside. Setting a new restore point should be done to prevent any future reinfection from the old restore point and enable your computer to "roll-back" in case there is a future problem.

To SET A NEW RESTORE POINT:
1. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
2. Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
3. Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
4. Click "OK".
5. Click the "More Options" Tab.
6. Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Graphics for doing this are in the following links if you need them.
How to Create a Restore Point.
How to use Cleanmgr.

Here is some useful information on keeping your computer clean:
  • Most important thing is to make sure Windows is kept up to date with the latest patches and updates from Windows Update.
  • If you don't have a Firewall installed, please choose from the following:
  • Here are two great Preventive programs:
    • SpywareBlaster protects you from malicious ActiveX controls and cookies. Make sure and check for updates twice a month.
    • IESpyads adds a long list of bad sites to your Restricted sites in Internet Explorer and protects against drive by downloads.
  • Surf Safe with McAfee's SiteAdisor. SiteAdisor will work with Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. SiteAdisor is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. SiteAdvisor uses the following color codes to indicate the safety level of each site.
    • Red for Warning
    • Yellow for Use Caution
    • Green for Safe
    • Grey for Unknown
Here are the link to install SiteAdisor in Internet Explorer and Firefox
  • Anti-Spyware Programs I Recommend:
    • Free Anti-Spyware Programs
    • Great Subscription Anti-Spyware Programs

It's done… and thanks. Java is one of those things that I always seem to neglect keeping up to date. FYI - just so you can update your link, the latest version is: "jre-1_5_0_10-windows-i586-p.exe" not v9. Thanks again for the guidance [and] all the new toys (tools) that i can use in the future. I've got a couple of friends whose boxes definitely need looking at, so I'm making a repair kit. Hopefully I'll be able to clean them up without too much trouble. If not.. I definately know where to go to get help. Thanks again –Blather. So… when do you get to move from Slyware Junior to Slyware Uber Dude? Soon I hope.
