Hello-

I have gone through the following process numerous times and the downloader.small.azk spyware returns to my computer everytime I open internet explorer. My DSL service seems to be running much slower as well. I have all the latest internet updates for the virus softwares used. This is what I have tried to do to remove this spyware.

1. Internet Options - Delete cookies and files (on and off-line).
2. Re-boot to Safe Mode and run Disk Cleanup - Delete temp files, internet files, recycle bin.
3. Run Spybot in Safe Mode - finds no threats.
4. Reboot to Safe Mode and run Ad-Aware - finds no threats.
5. Reboot to Safe Mode and run ewido - finds the downloader.small.azk (every time)
6. Reboot to Safe Mode and run Xoftspy.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello dsaltlandhelp and welcome to the TomCoyote Forums. I am currently looking over your log. As I am an still in training here, everything that I post to you must be reviewed by one of the teachers. Thus, there may be a small delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a suggested fix. Thanks for your patience! Dave
Hello dsaltlandhelp,

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Please reverse this process once the fix is complete.

Now you can run HiJackThis. Check the boxes next to these items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ntvt32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\ntvt32.exe

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Please delete the following file (if you're not sure how to do this then see the example in green text below):

C:\WINDOWS\ntvt32.exe<–FIle Only

As an example:
To delete C:\WINDOWS\filetogo.bye
Double click the My Computer icon on your Desktop.
Double click on Local Disc (C:)
Double click on the Windows folder,
Right click on filetogo.bye and from the menu that appears, click on 'Delete'

Reboot and post a new HJT log for review. Please also let me know how things are running.

Dave
Thank you for your help.

I followed your directions with one exception. After I ran HiJackThis and checked the items noted, the file ntvt32.exe did not exist in the Windows folder, so I could not delete it. I assume this is because HiJackThis already deleted it?

My DSL service still seems to be running a lot slower than it has historically, but this could be a Verizon issue if the latest log looks good. Please let me know if you have any other recommendations.

Here is the new log from the HiJackThis run after following your directions:

Hello dsaltlandhelp,

Your log appears to be clean.

Let's try a few things to see if we can improve your performance.

These are optional resource hogs that aren't needed at startup.

* Accept the license agreement by clicking the radio button.
* Under Windows Platform - J2SE™ Runtime Enviroment 5.0 Update 9, click the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language link.
* Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any entries that refer to Java 2 Runtime Enviroment and then reboot your PC.
* Navigate to and delete the following folder, if it exists: C:\Program Files\Java.
* Finally double click the installation file that you downloaded earlier.

Dave-

Thanks again for your help. I completed all of your recommendations and there are only two things to note. One, the downloader.small.azk is still routinely found by the Ewido full scan. Two, my DSL service continues to run slower than it has historically. Can the slow DSL service be linked to this downloader.small.azk? If not, then it is looking like this may be a Verizon issue that I will need to resolve with their DSL support.

Here is the latest HiJackThis log after completing your recommendations. Please let me know if you have any other recommendations.

dsaltlandhelp,

Let's try running this:

* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Okay, I downloaded and ran the ComboFix program and re-ran HiJackThis. Below are the two output logs. ComboFix did not re-boot my computer at the end of the scan, maybe indicating nothing was found. DSL service is still sloooow.

Combfix log:

Hi dsaltlandhelp,

This was from your combofix log. Do you have any idea what this directory is? :scratch:

C:\248013c87795a1f069806c6167

Also, check your bandwidth here:
http://www.2wire.com
Click the speedmeter button on the top right of the page.

We can compare that to expected DSL speed to see if it's your connection.

How is the computer running offline?

I'll keep looking into it also.
I ran the 2wire speedmeter multiple times to see what came back. The range was 32-136 kbps with average being around 100 kbps. The Verizon website reports speeds up to 768 kbps, but this may be a marketing ploy. I am not sure what kbps my DSL was running at before, but I would estimate that the DSL connection is running at about 20% of what it used to. The directory you are inquiring about only has one file in it named "msxml4-KB927978-enu.log". The heading of the log file reads the following: === Verbose logging started: 11/18/2006 22:11:55 Build type: SHIP UNICODE 3.01.4000.2435 Calling process: C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe === The text in the log file is very long and I don't know how/why it got there. Offline my computer is running well. We have been running numerous programs and completing a range of tasks and is operating as expected. Thanks for your continued recommendations. Let me know if you have any other suggestions.
dsaltlandhelp, Sorry to hear you're still having troubles. Your machine appears to be clean from what I can see and what you've told me how it's running. Those speeds you got are not good. You may not get the full 768kbps but your DSL should be close…alot closer than 100k. That isn't much better than dial-up. I would definitely go to your ISP and ask for help. Those speeds are NOT acceptable. Good luck, Dave
