Hi,

I think I have several problems with my 1-year-old laptop. I'd been getting winfixer pop-ups, then morwillsearch.com redirections, and now porn redirections and lycos.com redirections (the last three occur every time I search for anything in Yahoo or Google). It's been getting progressively worse and causing my computer to run slower and slower and McAfee & Ad-Aware don't pick up anything. Thanks for any help!

Here is my HijackThis log:

Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. It sounds like the Vundo trojan but I do not see it in the log. I do see this nasty: http://castlecops.com/clsid-1920.html you can read about it here: http://www.sophos.co...jstartpagd.html

I also see: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe which aol installs without asking and at the very least it is a resource waster. If you want it gone use Add Remove programs to uninstall it and I'll clean up anything left later. Some info:
http://www.greatis.c...viewmgr.exe.htm
http://www.spywarein...4.php#viewpoint

Your Java: C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe is out of date and that is a security issue. Start > Control Panel > Java > Update as soon as possible.

Let's give the computer a good cleaning and see what happens, follow the posted order.

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(the first five are clutter, if you do not use tem (click to see) check and remove them. You can still set any homepage you wish)

(the trojan)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete everything in this folder (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsne...refetch-XP.html
If you can't see the Prefetch folder use these instructions: http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

5) Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let me know how you are running now.

Thanks...pskelley

Wow! Thank you. Is all this normal? :
My internet browsing speed suddenly skyrocketed.
Although the computer's start-up after all of that was EXTREMELY slow; hopefully that was a one-time occurrence.
Haven't had any redirections now.
My wireless mouse isn't functioning.

I wasn't able to do anything with that first "nasty" you mentioned, so I assume that's still there somewhere. And I think I still have remnants of Viewpoint Manager. Is there anything else you can see I can clean out to speed up my system?

Thanks again, and here's my Hijack This log followed by the Ewido scan results:

G'day Mate, Take a look at the junk ewido cleaned out, especially the second from the end where it removed some kind of Logger.Agent. I searched but could find no information, but you may want to change your passwords in case you keystrokes were logged. Make sure you read the information under the tabs for the trojan at the top, it is gone. There will be instructions for fixing things the trojan may have changed. Also CCleaner removed a lot of junk for you. Most folks are amazed when they see how much. The Dell clutter was probably slowing you down a little also. Keep in mind that ewido is using a lot of resources and once the trial is over, unless you purchase it, you can keep and update the scaner for as long as you like but turn it off so it does not run. For two weeeks you can enjoy the extra realtime protection. Your first start or so will be slower until Windows repopulates the Prefetch with stuff you use all of the time. I think that is described in the link I provided to help you understand Prefetch. I have never heard of any of the processes which we use all of the time, effecting a wireless mouse?
I would wait until you are clean and then download the software again. Let's look at your logs:

ewido anti-malware - Scan report Created on: 11:59:12 PM, 1/11/2006

This: Spyware.Cookie.Esomniture : Ignored needs to go, delete it manually. You had a nice collection of nasty cookies, some cookies are necessary for banking, passwords, etc. Here is information to help you control the rest:

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 12:34:05 AM, on 1/12/2006

This indicates Java is updated: O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} -C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\ssv.dll

Your HJT log is clean and you are good to go  Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

I see no evidence of Viewpoint, to be sure navisgate to: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ <<< and delete the folder in red if it is there.

Because bad stuff may be in your System Restore files, it backs up everything and does not know the good from the bad, use this information to get clean SR files.

I'll wish you safe surfing and cheers...Phil :wavey:
