Click Start > Run > and type in:
services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find Microsoft authenticate service (MsaSvc)
Right click and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service
Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type"
in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK. Exit the
Services utility.



have hijack this fix these entries. close all browsers and programmes before
clicking FIX.

Delete this file if listed
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msasvc.exe


Now run combofix again

Doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Ran services.msc & completed instructions.

Upun running HJT, I found no:

Since I did not connect to the internet, there was no Windows update & hense no blue screen.

double-click on the killbox.exe program.


Start Killbox and click on Tools->Delete Temp Files.
Then select the option labeled Delete on reboot.

Do not close killbox, and open notepad, by clicking on Start, then Run, and typing notepad.exe and pressing the OK button.


When notepad is open, copy and paste the following bolded text into the notepad screen. You do this by highlighting each of the below bolded filenames and then pressing Control-C on your keyboard. Then click on the open notepad windows and press Control-V to paste the contents into the notepad.

Return to Killbox, go to the File menu and select Paste from Clipboard.


Still in Killbox, click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click No at the Pending Operations prompt.

All completed successfully.

Silly me, thinking that the windows update wouldn't work cause I wasn't on the internet. THIS time, the Windows update completed 3 of 3 updates at shutdown.

Windows Firewall is still disabled.

You need to update SunJava.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the [external image: Posted Image] icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

As I opened Add/Remove, I noticed that the “888Bar” application continues to reside. Although I really am not familiar with it, somehow I hadn’t believed this to be a good thing. Just for kicks, I reviewed both latest log files [Combofix & HJT], to find no reference of it. Huh. :huh:

Java is now updated.
No blue screen.
Windows Firewall is DISabled.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window
Click Done
Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.



4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
On reboot, briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
After the restart, create a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.


5. Please copy/paste the content of avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

As I attempted to remove 888Bar, I found this error:

“An error occurred while trying to remove 888Bar. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove 888Bar from the Add or Remove programs list?”

I pressed “Yes”

Avenger information: After I answered “yes” to “Do you want to proceed”, I received an error message. Also know that I followed exactly what I read the directions to say; i.e. Quote “2. Copy ALL the text in bold contained in the code box below to your Clipboard:” That is, I also included the notes: “Files to delete:” & “Registry values to replace with dummy:” Here is the error message exactly as displayed:

“Syntax error in line — no registry value to delete found. Line will be ignored.”

This was followed by two more error messages. Since I simply pressed “OK” for each, believing each to reference the same problem, I did not copy each precisely. However, one {paraphrase} Error “Line 0”

A third error message referencing the registry follows verbatim:

“[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\securityproviders]”

Then, as I reviewed the Avenger log file, I found all of that error info included, how about that. Although I wasn’t sure at first. I have now realized that copying ALL of your text was correct.

Mind running another combofix?

Doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

CYBERsitter 2000 or 2001 - anti-porn filter primarily. Required if you want the sites you visit filtered without having to load the software every time you launch your browser

The cyb2k.exe process is the main application for the Cybersitter application. Cybersitter will monitor browsing activity and filter out content based on rule that you specify. For example you may want to prevent the viewing of adult or pornographic related material. The Cybersitter filters will not work unless this process is running. If you do not use Cybersitter, you should terminate this process.




Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
    Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
    Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe




Click "Start"> "Run"> type in Regedit tap Enter Key

Make sure "My Computer" is highlighted

Click "Edit"> "Find"
Type in gdwfil.dll tap Enter Key.
Right Click on the file if found and select "Delete"

Tap the "F3" Key to find the next entry of the file. Continue using the "F3" Key until it's finished searching.

Close Regedit.


Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Backed up registry w/ erunt w/ no prob
With "My Computer" highlighted, searched for gdwfil.dll. However, NONE found. SHOULD there have been at least one incident?

Windows Firewall still disabled. Consistent Error message follows:

“We’re sorry. The Security Center could not turn on Windows Firewall. To try turning on the firewall yourself, go to Windows Firewall in Control Panel. In the Windows Firewall dialog General tab, select On (recommended), and then click OK.”

When I attempt to turn on the firewall via the control panel, here is the error message:

“Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings.”


Norton Anti-virus: Since I do not run Norton Anti-virus and instead, I run Avast, I UNinstalled Live Update.


Cybersitter: was a sample I had tried before I settled on another product since my kids were gonna be on the box. I gather the “2000 or 2001” reference was the release date of Cybersitter and NOT the installation date on this box cause I did not have this box in 2000. However, I cannot find any reference to Cybersitter OR CYB2K in either the Control Panel Add/Remove OR HJT. I am not sure just where to find it in order to terminate the process. Please advise.

Question: I went to the addresses you called out and presto, there both those registry keys, yup! Knowing that fooling around in the registry is tricky business with possible dire consequences, can you tell me exactly how to terminate these two? Do I simply select the “C2K” & the corresponding GURL01 “item” and delete?

Question: From where I sit, it LQQKS like that is all. After I complete deleting each of these registry items, the machine seems to run fine. Is there anything else?

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
    Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
    Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe




Click "Start"> "Run"> type in Regedit tap Enter Key

Make sure "My Computer" is highlighted

Click "Edit"> "Find"
Type in Cyb2k.exe tap Enter Key.
Right Click on the file if found and select "Delete"

Tap the "F3" Key to find the next entry of the file. Continue using the "F3" Key until it's finished searching.

Do the same for:
gdwfil.dll


Close Regedit.


Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
