Am a newbie to this forum - hope this is appropriate.

After visiting a suspect website I been infected with [Spyware Detection Alert] window, from a small icon on the bottom right of the task bar (red circle with white ! in it).
Have run all the usuals - AVG, HJT, Search & destroy, Panda Scan, CCCleaner. Most report a problem, but don't identify it. Cleared all my temporary folders. Checked TaskManager, but can't see any clues to source.

There are many references on Google to Spyware detection alert, but none tell me what it is or where it comes from. Followed some complex instructions from another forum to delete some un-deleteable files - but these didn't exist anyway.

I attach my HJT log

Many thanks

Philip

Hello Philip and welcome to the TomCoyote Forums. I am currently looking over your log. As I am an still in training here, everything that I post to you must be reviewed by one of the teachers. Thus, there may be a small delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a suggested fix. Thanks for your patience! Dave
Hello again Philip,

Please download
VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click Yes
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.
Thanks very much for your help. I went through the Vundo procedure as recommended, but sadly this made no difference.

I got desperate, so purchased PC Tools Spyware Doctor. This found many instances of malware, but none I recongised as having elements common to my problem. It allegedly fixed all occurences, but my original trojan is still there. Not quite sure where to go from here - perhaps a full re-install of XP, but that will involve hours of work re-installing other applications - I guess.

I appreciate your time.

Philip
Hi Philip,

No need to panic here! :o We should be able to clean this up without a reformat and a re-install.

You do need to make sure you follow my instructions though. Running the Vundofix tool is only part of the fix. I need to see the Vundo log that was created when you ran VundoFix (I had asked you to do this in my last post). It should be named Vundofix.txt. After I see the log we can hopefully clean up with HJT.

Thanks,
Dave
Dave, Sorry, I missed the request to send you the Vundo log - attached here at end Today I had AVG Spyware trap [Not-A-Virus.Hoax.Win32.Renos.fw] and suggested it was at C:\windows\systems32\drvbit.dll This was a file I had already suspected of trouble, but couldn't find anything about it on google. It's been [cleaned and quaratined] - but no change in my original issue. Many thanks Philip VundoFix V6.2.8 Checking Java version… Java version is 1.5.0.6 Scan started at 23:41:04 15/11/2006 Listing files found while scanning…. C:\WINDOWS\system32\winexy32.dll Beginning removal… Attempting to delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\winexy32.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\winexy32.dll Has been deleted! Performing Repairs to the registry. Done!
Hello Philip,

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Please reverse this process once the fix is complete.

Please run HiJackThis. Check the boxes next to these items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {EC44FF93-FEA7-44A6-A7B1-40CBFD710BF4} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkjh.dll (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmkjh - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkjh.dll (file missing)

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Please delete the following file (if you're not sure how to do this then see the example in green text below):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkjh.dll–>File Only

As an example:
To delete C:\WINDOWS\filetogo.bye
Double click the My Computer icon on your Desktop.
Double click on Local Disc (C:)
Double click on the Windows folder,
Right click on filetogo.bye and from the menu that appears, click on 'Delete'

Now reboot and post a new HJT log for review.

Dave
Dear Dave,

Success - I think. I followed your latest advice without difficulty. The only interesting things was that there was not such file as pmkjh.dll in \system32. However, I note on a search there is a file called pmkjhF790 (no extension) at the following location: c:\docs&setting\all users\Application data\SecTaskMan
This is just 50bytes, and dated 16 Nov. Might that be relevant or threatening?

Incidentally, between our posts I'd also done a couple of other things. Spybot S&D reported a SmitFraud virus and says it killed it - but had no effect. I subesquently found and used SmitFraudFix (in safe mode), and think this may have achieved soemthing.

I'm amazed at the generosity of people like you in giving your time. Many thanks.

Latest HJL log follows

Philip

Hello Philip,

Glad to hear things are running better. I think we're almost there.

You can go ahead and delete that file.

c:\docs&setting\all users\Application data\SecTaskMan\pmkjhF790<–File

An optional to fix with HJT is this one:
Windows Messenger utility. If you don't use Windows Messenger, this can be annoying. Available via Start -> Programs.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

Other than that you look good. Let me know how you make out and post a new log just to make sure you're clean.

Dave
Dave, I've not persued your latest recommendations, as I have a NEW problem (!) and not sure if it might be related. At every boot-up I get a Data Execution window reporting that Windows has closed the Spooler Subsystem App. Not only can't I print, but I can't (most of the time) access anything other than Add Printer from the Control Panel - and that doesn't work. I can't uninstall any printers. The following is a log of what I've tried: ========================= After booting Getting a [Data Execution] error: [Spooler Subsystem App] Control Panel > Printers: sometimes shows all normal icons sometimes just shows Add printer - and wont allow that Print a document from Word: Sometimes does nothing Sometimes just error messsage (see image) My Computer > Manage > Services > Print Spooler > Properties Startup type: Automatic Status: started Click Restart: no change Typing [net start spooler] in the Run dialog box - no change Type in Run Box: netsh firewall set service type = FILEANDPRINT mode = ENABLE this gave command line syntax error There's a process called tcsd_win32.exe in Task Manager - which google tells me might be suspicious. From Security Task Manager I quarantined this. No change. File restored. Control Panel > Network Connections - right click Status: no information Properties > Advanced > Settings > Exceptions: File & Printer sharing box ticked Tried turning off Firewall, and did a Repair on Network Connections no change Did a System File Check (SFC) - which requested original CD presumably found what it wanted. No errors reported No change Turn off Printer Spooler Services in windows\system32\spool\printer moved .shd and .spl files to D:\$$ (a safe place) Restart Printer Services Reboot: no change, above files have been restored Download Brother utility BatchPatch. and run it no change restarted Printer Spooler services Control Panel wont let me uninstall any printers ======================= You've already spent time on my smitFraud problem: if you'd prefer me to submit this problem as a new post, please say so. Regards, Philip
Hi Philip,

Sorry to hear you're having issues still. I did a little research on this error and ran into this link from Microsoft. I know you've already probably tried some of these fixes but run through it to see if there's anything that will help.

If not I suggest you post this problem in another section of this forum here:

Let me know how you make out. I'll keep digging also and see if I can find anything else.

Hello docramage,

Glad to hear you've got your problems worked out.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected anyway)

1. Turn Off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Turn On System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

You are running an old version of Sun Java which needs updating:

* Go here and click on the Download button to the right of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
* Accept the license agreement by clicking the radio button.
* Under Windows Platform - J2SE™ Runtime Enviroment 5.0 Update 9, click the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language link.
* Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any entries that refer to Java 2 Runtime Enviroment and then reboot your PC.
* Navigate to and delete the following folder, if it exists: C:\Program Files\Java.
* Finally double click the installation file that you downloaded earlier.

In addition to running and updating your current Anti-Malware protection, I recommend also adding the following:

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some free and evalutation versions that provide
better security than the Windows Firewall.Kerio Personal Firewall
Zone Alarm Free
Outpost Firewall

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
