Hello - i'm working with a friends computer, which has problems. They gave it to me saying that their daughter had used MSN messenger, and downloaded a virus. I have used AVG Anti-Spyware & AVG Anti-virus software to clean the machine up. I have also used Spybot & Adaware to clean all spyware & malware that i could. It is MUCH better than what it was, but it still has problems. if you just let it sit, it will give you "services.exe" errors… also, every so often, it will give me a message saying "the system is shutting down…", and gives me a 60 second timer then just shuts off. I haven't written down the exact messages - i will leave it running today until it displays more messages, then i will post them as soon as possible. If anyone could take a look at my HJT log and see if anything jumps out at you, that would be GREAT!! I will post more info as i receive it. Thank you very much!

YB

ok - not long after posting that first message, i started an AVG Anti-Spyware scan, and during that scan the machine BSOD-ed. the message that it gave me in the BSOD was: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL ***STOP: 0X000000D1 (0X7FFAD010, 0X00000002, 0X00000000, 0XAA47BF86) BEGINNING DUMP OF PHYSICAL MEMORY PHYSICAL MEMORY DUMP COMPLETE Upon rebooting, i received an error stating "The system has recovered from a serious error". Here is the info from that error: Error Signature: BCCode : 100000d1 BCP1 : 7FFAD010 BCP2 : 00000002 BCP3 : 00000000 BCP4 : AA47BF86 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1 The following files will be included in this error report: C:\DOCUME~1\ANITAM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERd26c.dir00\Mini110606-01.dmp C:\DOCUME~1\ANITAM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERd26c.dir00\sysdata.xml I will continue to leave the machine on and post any more errors that i come across. Thank you for looking. YB
ok - just popped up another set of errors. First was that a: "shutdown was being intiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM", and that i had 60 seconds to save my work. It had a "status code of 203". While that error was on the screen (counting down), i received the following: services.exe - Application Error The instruction at "0x7c9118d0" referenced memory at "0xc8006c00". The memory could not be "written". Click on OK to terminate the program Click on CANCEL to debug the program (while this error is on screen, the first one has not rebooted the machine yet) After hitting "CANCEL", it popped up several more times, then finally disappeared, with still no reboot. Since it did not reboot, i decided to try a few things, and see what works or what doesn't work… Trying internet (IE) only brings up a blank screen… Trying to open "My Computer" just brings up a flashlight going back and forth for a long time, then eventually shoe's the drives… THEN - Once it displayed the contents to "My Computer", i get the following error: (not sure if it's related to the actions i did, or just timing) Services and Controller app Services and Controller app has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience (yeah, i'm sure they are). i hit "Dont Send" (as usual) i try opening My Computer again, and it opens fine this time. I try IE again, and it just hangs displaying a blank screen… I will stop posting errors now and wait until someone can respond and help me. Thank you very much.
ybstuk :D

Welcome back to the forum, sorry for the delay in responding. You have a couple of bad entries on your log, don't know if this is the root of your problem. If its not , it sounds like your system is in bad shape. Do you have your windows CD ??

You have AVG anti spyware installed, have it set up this way.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check these and click on Fix Checked

O21 - SSODL: SysRun - {D7FFD784-5276-42D1-887B-00267870A4C7} - (no file)
O21 - SSODL: XEzTWAE - {5CA80D97-F602-A73D-5770-53DE77EA099D} - (no file)

Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Reboot and run this system cleaner.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Post the AVG Report and a new HJT log and let me know if it helped at all.
Thank you so much for replying! i did all of the steps that you recommended, and below are the requested log files. So far so good, no problems yet - usually takes a while to "act up", so i will leave it running and post anything if it happens. FYI, i do have the windows CD. if it comes to it, i can do a reformat, and rebuild it from the getgo… Thank you again! Onto the logs:

You can remove this entry with HJT

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vunerable. Update your Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add-Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment)

It should have an icon next to it [external image: Posted Image]
  • Select it and click Remove.
The current version can be downloaded from Sun Microsystems
  • Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9
  • Click the Download' button.
  • On the new web page, click the Accept License Agreement' button.
  • Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform
area just below the Accept button.

You can try this to repair some system files that may be missing or damaged. I don't think I would go through the trouble of a reinstall just yet.
  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Lets run the free Panda online Virus scanner as it may pick up some entries that are not showing up on your HJT log, paste the report into this thread. If all is well with Panda, I have some free tools for you to install to help keep you more secure.

Panda ActiveScan <<
ok - i let it sit for a couple hours, and it didn't lock or crash at all (was starting to think maybe we got it - ok, you… lol). i decided to invoke another AVG anti-spyware scan, just to see if it would do anything. It BSOD'd again. here's the details:

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

***STOP: 0X000000D1 (0X7FFDB010, 0X00000002, 0X00000000, 0XAA17BE49)

BEGINNING DUMP OF PHYSICAL MEMORY
PHYSICAL MEMORY DUMP COMPLETE

very similar to the earlier one i received.

Again, upon rebooting, i received an error stating "The system has recovered from a serious error". Here is the info from that error:

Error Signature:
BCCode : 100000d1 BCP1 : 7FFDB010 BCP2 : 00000002 BCP3 : 00000000
BCP4 : AA17BE49 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1

The following files will be included in this error report:
C:\DOCUME~1\ANITAM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERe245.dir00\Mini111506-01.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\ANITAM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERe245.dir00\sysdata.xml

Also came up with this:

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Error Signature:
szAppName: svchost.exe szAppVer: 5.1.2600.2180
szModName: wbemcomn.dll szModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 offset: 0001874b

The following files will be included in this report:
C:\DOCUME~1\ANITAM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERe245.dir00\svchost.exe mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\ANITAM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERe245.dir00\appcompat.txt

***And i just noticed that you have replied. I will do the recommendations that you mention, and see if those help this situation. please look over these most recent errors and see what you think. Thank you very much!

Bryan
ybstuk :D See if the suggestions in my post helps, run Panda and lets see what it finds. This forum is for Virus and Malware removal so if Panda is clean I can recommend some windows support sites that deal with windows issues. Ken :D
Bryan,

I reopened this thread for you so you can download and install some free programs to help you not get infected in the future.

Here are two Free Anti Virus programs if you need one, JUST INSTALL ONE…WITH AV..MORE IS NOT BETTER.

Free Avast 4 HomeEdition
Avira AntiVir® Personal Edition Classic

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
  • Tutorial for System Restore <– Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.
  • Tom Coyote
  • TonyKlein CastleCops
  • Grinler BleepingComputer
  • Geeks To Go
  • Dslreports

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D
