Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for your help, I did as you told me except for the proxy as there is a proxy. When I clicked fix checked I got a long HijackThis prompt starting with:

An unexpected error has occured at procedure O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
Error 5…etc

After fixing the checked ones I noticed that I got a new icon/shortcut on my desktop called thumbs.db I did not double click on it nor did i delete it, just it case things go worse.

Also, I tried using internet explorer after rebooting but it still doesnt work and gives me the same response: Cannot find server…the page cannot be displayed. On a side note, i get this annoying cannot find ida.exe prompt everytime I turn on my pc, is there is a way to get rid of that too? Thanks alot

Here's my new log:

Repair Internet Explorer 6

A number of XP users have reported situations with Internet Explorer 6 becoming corrupted and reporting a number of different errors. While there is certainly no guarantee, the two procedures listed below have restored functionality to IE6 for many users experiencing problems.

Note: Both methods listed require that the Microsoft Windows XP CD-ROM be available.

Method 1: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Run.
In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
Select the OK button.
Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.

Method 2: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP

From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
Click the Search button.
In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

If you download and double click on this small app, it will restore all the default search fuctions for IE.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/IEFIX.reg

Save it to your desktop.

Right click on the file IEFIX.reg and select Merge.
thanks for your advice. I have followed your instructions but unfortunately internet explorer still does not work. Furthermore, your link to iefix.reg does not work, it brings up a page of text and not an application, so i downloaded iefix.zip from another site but there was no iefix.reg and no option called merge. I then installed internet explorer 7 but that also does not work.

On a sidenote, I am worried about an icon that recently appeared on my screen called thumbs.db what do u think i should do with that. Also, since your previous instructions, i recieve an error prompt when i shut down (different error each time). It does not affect the shutting down, it just appears as windows shuts down.

On a sidenote, I am worried about an icon that recently appeared on my screen called thumbs.db

I think that's a windows hidden file:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

see if you have this file:
C:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\ie.inf

Right Click on ie.inf and select install.
