Please perform the following Searches, — but do not make any changes until you receive additional instructions.
Using Windows Explorer, click
Tools - Folder Options - View
Scroll down and put a check mark in "Show All Files"
Still in Windows Explorer
Navigate to
C:\Windows\System\ Visually scroll down in the contents of that folder searching for "wmdconf32.dll"
Report back - yes or no - you did or did not find "wmdconf32.dll"
Close your Windows Explorer (without making any changes) using the X in the upper right hand corner
Next:
GoTo - Start - Run - (type)MSCONFIG - then Press Enter
Select - System.ini(tab)
Expand - [boot] (by clicking on the + sign in front of [boot]
Expanding [boot] will give you a listing of about 17 or 18 items
Please write down (on a piece of paper) all of the items….. (take care to be precise and exact in copying these items to paper)
For example, the list may look something like the following (yours may be different)
***(this is an example list only)***
oemfonts.fon_vgaoem.fon
shell=Explorer.exe
system.drv=atmsys.drv
drivers=mmsystem.dll power.drv
user.exe=user.exe
gdi.exe=gdi.exe
sound.drv=mmsound.drv
dibeng drv=dibeng.dll
comm.drv=comm.drv
keyboard.drv=keyboard.drv
*DisplayFallback=0
fonts.fon=vgasys.fon
386grabber=vgafull.3gr
display.drv=pnpdrvr.drv
mouse.drv=mouse.drv
atm.system.drv=system.drv
****Note: (your item: shell=Explorer.exe, may read - shell-Explorer.exe vmmdiag32.exe)
Please carefully write down all of the entries (as they appear in your System.ini)
Please answer these two search questions by posting your results in your next reply.
1. Did you find C:\windows\System\wmdconf32.dll ?
2. Type the "entire" list from your System Configuration Utility
(msconfig - System.ini(tab) - [boot] list
With that information we may be closer to understanding the "alert".
**There may be additional instructions to follow at that time.
Then we'll move on to repairing your machines ability to configure Display Properties - Resolution

Post the HJT Log and write a description of how your machine is presently performing.
Especially describe the apparent presence of ''Win32:Sality-O''
I have PM'd mschroe919 with my observations about:
shell=Explorer.exe vmmdiag32.exe
and C:\Windows\System\wmdconf32.dll
Please feel welcome to return to this forum "other computer problems" to address any further problems with setting your Display Resolutions — after you have completed whatever instruction mschroe919 may provide.
Best Regards
