Hi everybody,
great forum helped me a lot already. I tried to use this info on here to clean my laptop. I am not 100% if I am clean now. Spy Sweeper finally does not pick up on winlogonhook anymore. But I found several other threats in between. Could somebody please check the HJ log and let me know if I am safe for now.

Thanks for all the great work in here.

Hello and welcome to the TC forums

Not seeing anything bad in your log but lets do this.

Please go HERE and do a online scan.
Let me know what is found.

After scan, reboot and post a new HijackThis log

Also let me know how the computer is running now.
Hi LTDate and thank you for your help.

So I ran the online scan. All that was discovered was 4 tracking cookies. On fixing the problem it the scanner hung up on 3 of 4 and I had to cancel (after waiting half an hour). Here is the log from the online scan:

Thanks for your help

P.S. The system is running OK. I still have a feeling it starts up a bit slower than before I started having all the trouble, but that is actually hard to tell. Thanks
lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup your Registry…
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run…)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
Thanks for all the help. The registry clean up did not go to wel. Sytem started eveb slower afterwards and half of my file links to the programs weren't working anymore (I have a lot of CAD software on my machine). I had to restore the old registry. If i have time sometime I will go through all around 400 unvalid entries that where found to determine the not used once (some red once actually are crucial for my CAD software. Thanks anyhow

Never had that issue before. Thanks for letting me know. Is it still running slow?
Sorry for all the typos in my last post. Just realized them, did not check before I posted it. Yes, system need really long time to boot. What worries me most is the fact that my Norton seems to be the last application to be booted, while other internet services are already running and accessing the web. I had my outlook configured for start on boot and check for emails (enabled that option now). When I reloaded the backuped registry I actually got some weired alerts from spysweeper (did not write them down unfortunately), that the registry wants to change some brother helpers (indication for hijackers?). I simply did not allow that than. I do get some failures while I am working though. Sometimes windows just shuts the explorer (not the internet explorer, but the actual task) down, reporting some malefunction and I have to restart the system. Running Photoshop I get other programms that seem to be running in the background to crash (windows alert that the programm encountred malefunction and shut down). I am in the office and have my laptop at home right now, but I will try to reproduce the errors/alerts later tonight and post them. At this point I would just do a complete new install of my system (it is running for almost 2 years now, so that might not be a bad idea anyhow), but it is just a pain to deal with microsofts activation service. Last time I called them (after I switched a harddrive) to reactivate Office, they were telling me that I would be installing their product on more than one computer, actually had to talk to a superviser to get my acyivation code. Anyhow, I will post the alerts and errors later. Thanks
This will be much safer.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.
ATF Cleaner done. Quite nice, I used to do this manual.

Here the log:

as far as I can tell this looks normal. I haven't had a chance to reproduce the crashes yet. Hopefully get to it later today or tomorrow.

I wanted to attach a screen shor from the task manager, but I guess that does not work on this forum. Don't even know if it would help.

Thanks
Only thing I see left is you need to update SunJava.

Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the [external image: Posted Image] icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Thanks, everything done. One little thing left for me to find out. I am using MS IExplorer 7 (yes, shame on me), and I had a symantec/yahoo tool bar (came with the installation of my brand new norton), that somehow disappeared. Unfortunately I cannot just reinstall, because I did the online installation and was too cheap to spend an extra 3 bucks for the actual installation file dl. Any idea. Thanks
Well, it is the yahoo toolbar (which I could have just dl'ed from yahoo) but it has some extra features incorporated by symantec's Norton AntiVirus. I did manage to get it back though. It was one of the BHO's that spysweeper blocked when I recovered my old regestry. I found the entry for it and added it again. Everything is running fine now. Thanks for all your help. I'll have to sign up for the classroom one of these days. I think it's great to be able to help others here. Great work from all of you.
Good Job

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.
IE Spyads
They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
