My kids were wanting to play some games that required the Java Sun installed. When I tried to install it I got the Error 1723 message. I have Windows ME, which Microsoft doesn't support anymore. How can i correct this error message?
Error 1723 refers to Windows Installer 2.0, but can provide additional information, such as which specific .dll file was not found, etc. Do you have any further information about this Error 1723 message?

As you probably know, Windows ME is no longer supported by Microsoft.
But it is still possible to get the updates that they once provided.
If your WinME operating system isn't fully updated (to what is available) then you should update it.
(Resource linked below)

Order of "fixes":
– If the Error 1723 provides additional information about an unregistered .dll, etc. – fix that first.
(if you have questions about any additional information or recommended "fix" post your question(s) before continuing with the remainder of these recommendations)

– If you are not running Internet Explorer 6.0, then update to 6.0, here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details…;DisplayLang=en

*** (Note: IE 7 is also available on the same page linked above. I do not recommend IE 7 on WinMe machines)

– Next (after the above) you are ready to get the available updates for WinME from Microsoft, here:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp
In the scroll box, scroll down and Select Windows Millenium Edition

– Next, Using Control Panel - Add/Remove - Uninstall "all" versions of JAVA Runtime Environment that may have been installed on your machine at any time. After successful un-installation of JAVA, navigate to C:\Program Files\JAVA and Delete any remaining files and folders inside that location.

– Next, Go here to Download the most recent build of JAVA Runtime Environment:
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9
- http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
(Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9",about half way down the page)
ACCEPT the License Agreement
Select Download - Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p.exe 15.74 MB
Save it to a place easy for you to remember, so you can find it.

– Next, Log off the Internet, close all applications and turn off your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware utilities

– Next, Install the new JAVA Runtime Environment by Double-Clicking on: jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p.exe

Keep us posted with your progress

Best Regards

EDIT:
How long has it been since you cleaned out your "temps and Junk files"?

Download, install and run CleanUp! 4.51 (use the default settings provided when installed)

Reboot your machine into SAFE Mode
Run Scan Disk
Run Disk Defragmenter
Now when I try to install Java, I get a message that it's already on this machine. I have deleted everything I can find that refers to this. I have also posted a hijackthis log, maybe that could clear up the problem.
Please follow through with your HJT Post. There are some items that are "questionable". If after you finish with that log, you have further problems, please feel free to post here. You should note that you have elements of more than one AntiVirus installed and active. Of most specific interest is the active presense of both AVG and AVAST! Two or more AntiVirus products running active will create various difficult conflicts. Decide on one AntiVirus Product and disable or uninstall all others. On that machine, I could consider keeping AVG and Uninstalling AVAST!, simply because of Resource considerations. You may previously have had an installation of Norton? And you may still have some elements of Norton existing on that machine. I notice that you've used PCPitstop Full Tests? Please consider Running a fresh full test and posting the TechExpress for the results back here into this Forum. Since your kids want to use the machine for some online gaming, it might be well to eliminate "extra" applications and processes that could be unnecessary resource hogs. The PCPitstop Full Test would likely be of great help in pursuing that end. Best Regards
