Hi,

I'm being plagued with reports from AVG that it's found the Klone virus! Also when using Firefox Mozilla I get pop ups from winantiviruspro and others, and to top it off my computer keeps restarting itself sometimes it reboots 3 times before it stays on!

I've run various spyware programs but nothing seems to fix my problem

I've attached a log from combofix below and the Hijackthis log.

Please Help!

Hi Hartley95 and welcome to the TomCoyote forums.
My name is Vino Rosso - if it helps, you can call me Vino for short. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a little time to research and, while I complete my training, all my recommended fixes will be checked by an expert.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Finally, please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
I'll be back soon once I've checked out your log.
Thanks
Vino
Hi hartley95

1 - VundoFix
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

2 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide:
  • the vundofix.txt log
  • a new HijackThis log
  • and a description of how your PC is behaving
Good Luck
Vino
Hi Vino, Thanks for the quick reply and helping me.

I've run VundoFix and HijackThis and attached the logs
I deleted a few lines from the previous run of HijackThis last night , the ones that said files missing. I was getting desperate last night with all the popups! I've also install zonealarm to see if that helped

since running VundoFix I haven't had any popup!! :o)
and it's only rebooted once!

Thank you very much

Hi Hartley95

I deleted a few lines from the previous run of HijackThis last night

Please do not delete anything unless advised. You may delete something that would have helped me understand what's causing the problem. Worse still, you don't want to delete any good entries!

I've also install zonealarm to see if that helped

While you may think that installing and running extra protection is good, unfortunately this is not so and I must advise you to only have ONE firewall installed and running and only ONE real-time anti-virus installed and running. Why? Please read…

1 - Anti-virus Conflicts
Your log shows that you have two different antivirus programs installed and running side-by-side (Norton and AVG).
This can potentially cause major problems on your computer system and it is almost always a very, very BAD idea to attempt to run two entirely different 'on-access' resident scanner anti-virus products simultaneously. It is simply an accident waiting to happen.

Most of the popular anti-virus products (when running together) will "fight for control" over the user's machine, and it is this conflict that will create slowing the system speed as well as other serious compatibility problems. This can also create registry conflicts as well as causing false virus alerts - or worse, missing alerts entirely!

Additionally, many of these types of programs simply do not "play nice" or work well with each other. Unfortunately, the only thing many of these types of security applications seem to detest more than potentially harmful viruses - is other antivirus applications running simultaneously together with them. Also, not all AV programs can be installed as secondary scanners, and sometimes installing separate AV programs will cause a conflict or the program's installer will even try to 'uninstall' any other anti-virus programs during the installation.

Therefore, my advice would be to pick one (or the other) to use and then use Windows Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the one that you do not want to use anymore.

2 - Firewall Conflicts
Your log shows that you have two different firewall programs installed and running side-by-side (Norton and Zone Alarm).
The reason is basically the same as above for not running two anti-virus programs.

Again, my advice would be to pick one (or the other) to use and then use Windows Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the one that you do not want to use anymore.

3 - Program Download
Please download to your Desktop ATF Cleaner by Atribune from >here<. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. It does not require any installation and uses minimal system resources. It is set up to clean IE, FireFox and Opera, and detects the browsers you have and greys out the other(s).
We will use this program later.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Select Files To Delete choose: Select All
If you rely on system remembered passwords, you should UNcheck Cookies.
Important Do not uncheck anything else!
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT FIREFOX SAVED PASSWORDS
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT COOKIES AND SAVED PASSWORDS
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your cookies and saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

4 - Kaspersky Online Scan
Please do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    o Scan Options:
    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
5 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide:
  • the Kaspersky Scan report
  • a new HijackThis log
  • and a description of how your PC is behaving
Remember, if you can, it's worth printing these instructions out before you start.

Good Luck
Vino
Hi Vino, Thanks for getting back to me! I didn't realise Norton virus and firewall were installed! I thought I only had norton system works installed so I've removed all Programs associated with Norton!

Here are the logs you asked for.

My computer seems to be runnibg a lot better no virus warnings and runs quicker!

Cheers

Hi Hartley95

My computer seems to be runnibg a lot better no virus warnings and runs quicker!

Fantastic! That's what I like to hear.

Great News! Your HijackThis log appears clean and here's some valuable information that will help to keep it that way.

1 - Delete Tools
The following files and folders were downloaded to help get rid of the malware on your PC. These can now be deleted as they are no longer required.
  • VundoFix.exe on your Desktop
2 - All Clean
This is adapted from my general post for the 'All Clean' status however please advise on any problems you may still have before proceding with the following:-

Hide your System Files
These files are hidden to avoid accidental deletion so please follow these steps:

Click Start
Open My Computer
Select Tools > Folder Options > Select the View Tab
Uncheck Show hidden files and folders in the Hidden files and folders section
Select Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click OK, OK

Reset your system restore points
This will remove any infected files that may have been backed up by Windows. A tutorial is available >here<.
Please note that you need Administrator privileges to do the following:

Turn off System Restore
Start > right-click My Computer and select Properties
Click the System Restore tab
Tick Turn off System Restore
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore
Start > Right-click on My Computer and select Properties
Click on the System Restore tab
Click on C: drive then Settings
Untick Turn off System Restore on this drive
OK, OK

Make Internet Explorer more secure
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Note: If you are using IE, you may want to consider changing Mozilla FireFox which offers not only better security but it also has more features than IE however remember that you still need to use IE for certain sites like Microsoft Updates.

Windows Updates
Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.

Anti-Virus
It is important that your computer has anti-virus software installed and it is updated at least on a weekly basis. Further information and programs can be found >here<

Firewall
Using a Firewall in its default configuration greatly reduces the risk of your computer being hacked. Further information and programs can be found >here<

Hosts File
For added protection you may also like to add a host file, for more information regarding host files read >here<

Anti-Malware Programs (all free)
Next, if they're not already present, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs, and the updating of them on a regular basis:
  • Ad-Aware SE - This is a program that scans for and removes known spyware from your machine. >Tutorial<
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Spybot is a tool like Ad-Aware SE whereas it seeks out and removes known spyware from your machine. >Tutorial<
These two tools (Ad-Aware & Spybot) are perfect complements to each other as one will most always find something the other missed.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machine.
  • IE_Spyad - Works by placing known "bad" sites into your Internet Explorer "Restricted Zones" prohibiting them from doing potentially problematic things to your computer.
Safe Computing
