I have Viruses in my Quick Launch Toolbar that say I have viruses and spyware. I have a new toolbar called Protection Bar that I can't turn off. A current AVG virus scan that I am running has indicated that I have at least the Java/ByteVerify virus, but I'm thinking that there is more. I have removed viruses myself in the past but I always think that I may have missed something. I saw this forum and thought I would see if there is someone who understands what is what on this log and what I need to do to get rid of whatever is currently on my computer. Thanks.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Please download the trial version of AVG anti-spyware 7.5from here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install AVG anti-spyware anti-malware.
  • When installing, under Additional Options uncheck Install background guard and Install scan via context menu.
  • When you run AVG anti-spyware for the first time, you could get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click Ok.
  • The program will prompt you to update. Click the Ok button.
  • The program will now go to the main screen.
You will need to update AVG anti-spyware to the latest definition files.
  • On the left-hand side of the main screen click the Update Button.
  • Click on Start.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once finished updating, close AVG.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG anti-spyware manual updates. Make sure to close AVG anti-spyware before installing the update.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

You took off and did the whole Smitfraud fix! Looks good. I just see a couple of items to be fixed.

Disable SpywareGuard:
You have SpywareGuard installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
  • Right click the running icon ofSpywareGuard, it will open the program.
  • Then go to Menu, file, exit.
  • Then confirm the program is closed.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpywareGuard again.

Disable Microsoft Windows Defender:
We need to disable your Microsoft Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Under Real-time protection options, unselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
  • Click Save
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:

Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

I have one question re: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE I have looked at this file before to see whether or not it was legit and all the information I have seen said that it is part of Realtek and should not be removed unless it is suspected in causing problems. Just want to make sure I'm not going to have a problem when it's gone. See below. alcxmntr.exe is installed alongside hardware drivers for the Realtek AC97 audio device. This program is a non-essential system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

Please run Kapersky. Let me know if it finds any infected files. Did you get rid of the Java/ByteVerify virus?
Kapersky and AVG sometimes find different things.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.
