I have recently reconnected to the net. Now when I log on I can only do it in safe mode with networking. When I first logged on I discovered several new spyware and trojansI have tried several removal tools and have removed several but i can still only start in safe mode and when I try to start normal it says I have low virtual memory. One of the errors on the Blue screen was stop:0x0000008e which i discovered was from a memory chip i had installed. After i removed it and rebooted it ran ok for about a day then it got worse. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My computer will only start in safe mode, luckily i have the networking option. I recently reconnected to the internet after a year and things went haywire. If I start in normal mode i get several errors and then it says virtual memory is to low. In safe mode i cannot use microsoft office programs and windows installer will not work. I had several trojans and spyware on here when i first signed on but i think most are gone now. any help would be great, i need this pc for work. I also had to re register my windows.

Welcome to Tom Coyote Your infected with Wareout, run this tool and follow the instructions and post the report and a new HJT log when done.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
FixWareout Subratam
FixWareout Lonny
  • Save it to your desktop and run it.
  • Click Next, then Install,
  • Then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
  • The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
  • At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.
Save the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt and post it into your next reply.

Now lets check some settings on your system. For (2000/XP) Only)
  • Go to Start > control panel.
  • If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections.
  • Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl.
  • Left click on properties.
  • Click the Networking tab.
  • Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
  • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be available on some systems
  • Next Go start> Run type cmd and hit OK
  • Type in ipconfig /flushdns then hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)
  • Type exit hit enter
here is the report Check for missing files ….. C:\WINDOWS\system32\AUTOEXEC.NT not there ….. End check for missing files ….. please post this at the forum

ta2dogg, :D

Besides a Wareout infection, you also have a few trojans that could be jeapordizing your online security, I suggest you do no online banking or shopping until we get you clean. You may want to print this out as we will be offline for most of the fix.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.

Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check these entries and click on Fix Checked.

  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • Ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Still in Safemode, look for and delete these files.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wqtgbnj.dll

You will have to do a windows search for these two
xartcd5.dll
slamm.exe

Reboot normally and run this system cleaner

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

As a last precaution, I would run Fix Wareout again.

Then do this..

Close any instances of Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
Go Start> Control Panel> Internet Options.
You will be on the General Tab.
Click on Delete Cookies/ Delete Files and Offline Content as well.
Go to the Programs Tab and click on Reset Web Settings.

The rest of your log looks fine  How are things running now??
It will still only start up in safe mode. When i try normal it says an error has occured and it begins dumping memory or something like that. I still can't access any microsoft office utilities. I did find out that the modem i have is causing the problem with me not bieng able to access yahoo and the isp is working on it. I am at my wits end with this. I still 28 GB of space left and have 256 MB of ram. Do you have any other suggestions? I seen were it said i could increase systems cache or something like that but not sure how to do that.
ta2dogg

This appears to be a windows issue, lets try a couple of things and if it don't work than I can direct you to some windows support sites that deal with this sort of thing. You will need your Win XP disk for these.

  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Another option is to do a system repair, you can boot from the xp cd, you bypass the Recovery Consule and proceed like your going to do a reinstall of windows, but at that point you choose the repair feature.

Ken
Glad things are well and I was able to help you.
