Hello there,

I posted a log a while ago but my internet connection was so intermittent that I 'timed out' of your query system.
I have wiped my hard drive, loaded up essential programs (plus some non-essential software thanks to my kids!) and have a general and specific query.
Generally, am I running all the anti-virus/anti-spyware/firewall that I need to keep my computer as clean as possible, and how do I keep it that way?!
Specifically, I keep getting 'run time error messages' and 'messenger service' messages popping up from 'www.patchupdate.com' and 'www.correctreg.com' amongst others - how do I get rid of them?!

I have run a HJT log which is below:

I am still getting connectivity problems with my AOL ADSL modem but now that my contract has expired I have a MAC code to give to a new provider, hopefully TalkTalk, which I am trying to order online but the page keeps going blank!

Hoping you can help.
Where to start!
You don't appear to have either an anti-virus or a firewall installed on this PC.

Free AVs:

Avg Free Edition: Available here.
avast! 4 Home Edition: Available here
AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic :Available here

While you can download them all to see which one you prefer, only install one at a time - running two or more anti-virus programs simultaneously can cause conflicts resulting in less, not more, protection.

Free firewalls:

Zone Alarm: Available here.
Kerio: Available here.
Outpost: Available here.

It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time, but you can download both to your Desktop and install each in turn to see which one you prefer.

Next, you don't have any Service Packs installed on the PC which means that it's open to a multitude of infections. Given this fact and the above, I would download, and save to disc, a firewall and AV and then reformat the PC to ensure that it's clean.
Then i'd install both of the security applications you've chosen above BEFORE you connect to the internet and then update your AV as a priority - it's no good unless it's up to date.
Now you need to visit the Microsoft website and download all the available patches for your Operating System.
This could take a while because you are going to need everything that they have which is a lot, but there isn't really any alternative.

Ewido has recently been taken over by Grisoft, the makers of AVG, so you will need to go to the Ewido website and download the latest version which is AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

For the "Messenger Service" popups:

Download shootthemessenger.exe from here and save it to your Desktop.
Double click it to run it.
If you see the following message, then click on Disable Messenger:Messenger Service is
Currently Running!

When the process has been completed, your should see:Messenger Service is
Safely Disabled

Some bedtime reading: This is a very good tutorial about keeping your computer safe and secure on the internet.
