If anyone can me with this problem it would be greatly appreciated. This seems to be the second time in 2 months that I have gotten this type of virus that Norton can not catch. Here is a description of the problem. I am getting a fake system warning (a black ! in a yellow triangle) and it appears on the toolbar at the bottom of my screen. It says various things such as 'Your spyware needs updating, system needs anitspyware update. Your firewall needs updating. You are at risk of network attacks and you have adware.' It trys to direct me to a spyware and adware removal package but I never click on it. I just click on the X to close the pop up.

There is also another problem, a link for the same product seems to have found its way onto the background of my desktop. It goes as follows:

Warning! Spyware threat detected on your PC.

Your computer has several fatal errors due to spyware activity.
Your IP address is 127.0.0.1 and via this address an unauthorized
access was gained by another computer. It is strictly recommended
to install an antispyware software to close all security breaches.

Your IP address: 127.0.0.1
They know your using: Internet Explorer
Your computer is: Mobile Intel Pentium III CPU M 800 Mhz
Status: Very high risk!

Below is my Highjack this log.

Please please help.

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post:
C:\rapport.txt

Completed. Here is the information from the report… Please let me know what to do next. Thanks! Hi,

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

[external image: Posted Image]

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Danny, You asked for rapport.txt, ewido log and a new hijack this log. I posted each separately Also, I did not have a entry at all under the Web tab/web pages in my custimize desktop button. Thanks for your help. KGD :)
Hi,

Your computer is now clean!

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

After System Restore is turned back on, create a Restore Point:

Go to: 'Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools', and select System Restore.
In the System Restore Wizard, select: 'Create a restore point'.
Click: Next
Give a description to the new Restore Point. (Something like: Clean PC)
Click: Create

**To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

This article includes important ways of how to keep safe, and has links to programs that you should download to keep spyware free!

Some programs that I recommend:
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
