Run these through Killbox all at once, have it set for ALL FILES

c:\windows\desktop.html
c:\windows\Inet20004
c:\windows\system32\kernels8.exe
c:\windows\system32\taskdir.exe

Make sure windows is still enabled to show all files and folders, boot to Safmode and make sure there gone, delete this folder if its present.

c:\program files\Save

Please download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Just run option # 1, I need to see the report.
To start, another thanks for your time. Should you feel it to be easier to format my hard disks just say the word. My issues seem to be deep and I hate to take to much of your time. tweber,

We always use a reformat as a last resort, I don't thinks its needed right now. Panda gave us some clues to what was going on on your system, as you can see by the Smithfraud report , you are infected with that piece of garbage.

Lets run Option #2 to get rid of it.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Close any instance of Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
  • Go to Start> Control Panel> Internet Options . You shoud be on the General Tab
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Files > and offline content as well
  • Then go to the Programs Tab and Reset Web Settings

Lets run another cleaner, the issues scan will clean out the registry, after you run the issues scan and you click on FIX, it will prompt you to backup….say yes

If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < When it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes
Tutorial for CCleaner

Let me see the Smithfraud log and a new HJT log.

Hang in tweber, we will get there yet :D
All the steps went through flawless.

Tweber,

Good job, we got rid of that crapola

Outside of those two questionalbe entries, your log looks good. But I want to have one of the moderators on this forum look at those two and see how he feels about the. In the meantime, run this very quick scan, it may show us if something is hidden and not showing up on your log.

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked.
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Post the results from this scan and I will be back in a bit :D

Tweber, :D

We are thinking that since you are a gamer that those files were put into the npp folder for that purpose. No one can find anything bad about them.

So, looks like we got rid of the bad stuff, are you still having any issues??

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Everything is running great. The initial program that picked up everything is also showing clean. I was able to fix my desktop as well with some of the help I received. I've started securing everything better so that it (hopefully) won't happen again. About the only thing left to say is I'm extremely pleased with this site and the help I received. The help was more professional than what you normally get from paid help. I can't say enough about how much it's appreciated. I'm a cop, so for obvious reasons it would do no good to leave you guys in my will :P but I will definately be leaving a donation. Thanks!! B)
Tweber,

Your too funny :D

I'm a cop, so for obvious reasons it would do no good to leave you guys in my will tongue.gif but I will definately be leaving a donation.

What I will do is keep this thread open for you for a few weeks, why don't you post back with a new HJT log then and lets look it over again and make sure nothing has come back.
I think it may have come back. Late last night I turned the laptop on, opened IE and it gave 6-7 "clicks" like pop up's were blocked. I checked my outgoing log through my router to see what was being accessed. By putting the IP address listed in the address bar I came back with http://paypopup.com/

The only thing I did was open my home page (msn.com) I didn't go anywhere else.

I ran spybot and it showed smitfraud was on my computer along with:
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.AntiVirusDisableNotify
CoolWWWSearch
Mailbot
Smitfraud-C
SpySheriff
WhenU.SaveNow

I ran Spybot in safemode, it appeared to fix the issues, but they show back up with the next scan. I also ran CCcleaner, and fixed issues.

I will run another ewido, but I'm going on duty soon and running out of time.

I ran the smitfraud fix (option 1) and all the files were detected again. Log is below.

On a side note, C:\programfiles\Save is back. When I look inside the folder, there is an unistall.exe, but I'm somewhat afraid to use it without being told to.

Another interesting thing is my Desktop had the same issues and I've been trying to fix issues with it using the same suggestions offered for my laptop. (probably not a good idea, but I didn't want to tie up your resources with two threads going at once) The desktop came clean, and it's still clean. I'm not sure if the problems returned to the laptop because of another computer on my network, or if there is still something "dirty" on here.

I went into add/remove programs and uninstalled everything that wasn't needed. I tried to dump everything game related, but I still see things associated with msn.zone. I don't need it, but can't seem to get it to go away. Under add/remove installed programs I see "My Way Search Assistant" but there is no option to uninstall.

The logs below are recent and were ran after a restart after doing the above actions.

I forgot to tell you that if I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all and everything I do is always a pain in the butt……

Tweber,

What I would do is to run Option 2 again with Smitfraud.

These may or maynot be the problem, but lets remove them and see what happens. If there related to one of your games you may have to just reinstall it again.

Then boot to safemode and remove this entry.
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\npp\patch32.dll

Still in Safemode, delete these files, make sure your in the npp folder because svchost in the windows\system32 folder is legit.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\npp\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\npp\patch32.dll

Reboot and post a new log
With Killbox I was finally able to dump the 2 files in the npp folder.

After I rebooted I tried again to drop O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\npp\patch32.dll but got an error for the second time. I ran HJT again and it didn't show up. The two files are still gone though.

There shouldn't be an issue with the games. The only games played on here are your basic msn.com puzzle games. The command and conquer game that used to be installed has been gone for a while. I'm still not sure why all the entries for games come up on the HJT log.

No time to to see how it runs, off to work. I'll play around with it later to see if this got the fix

Thanks again
