A couple of things to try, you will need your windows CD for this.
  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

* From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
* Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
* Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
* In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
* In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
* Click the Search button.
* In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
* Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
* Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

Let me know if any of this helps, if not another option is to do a system repair. Lets do the above first.

I dowloaded and installed CClean. Uninstalled Firefox. Ran CClean Got the following "Missing Shared C:\windows\system322\juctl.dll Registry Key HKLM\software\microsoft windows\current version\sharedDlls After this I opened IE again and got the "Application Not Found" message again Had to re install Firefox to get to this forum again. Does this help?
I have tried installing ie.inf but unfortunately I don't have my Service pack 2 disc with me, I only have the original OEM Windows disc for Acer computer and it doesn't find the file.
 It is looking good. I have downloaded and installed IE 7 and links are working well so far. I can't find a smilie with fingers crossed but they are. Thank you very very much for your help. Is there anything else I should do?

Glad things are running better for you

* Killbox ..You can drag it to trash.

* ATF Cleaner was written by one of our own malware fighters and is safe to use . Run it a few times a month to keep your system nice and tidy.

* Ewido is a trial and an excellent program, after the trial you will still be able to check for updates, run scans and remove any bad entries, you will just lose the background guard feature.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
