My AVG virus checker finds Trojan downloader

I recently had lots of trouble with Surfsidekick. I eventually got rid of it but now I still can't get Norton to auto download or scan. So I have used AVG for a few days and it keeps finding Trojans .

I have followed the instructions and complete scans of Spybot and Adaware. Downloaded and run Ewido in safe mode.

Hijackthis 1.99.1
Its important that Hijackthis is installed in its own permanent folder for backup purposes.
  • Go to where you currently have HJT installed and delete the whole folder.
  • Use the link above or the links in my signature to download HJT 1.99.1 setup to your desktop
  • Double Click on the Setup icon and by defaut it will unzip to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis
  • HJT should now reside in C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure WordWrap is unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread.
  • Please use the [external image: Posted Image] Button and not the New Topic Button
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.


Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.



Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check the following and click on Fix Checked. Some may be gone already, not to worry of there not present.

Open HJT > Misc Tools > Process Manager and look for this process and click on Kill Process

C:\Program Files\Common Files\mfku\mfkum.exe



Then run HJT Scan Only and remove this entry

Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vunerable. Update your Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add-Remove Programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment)

    It should have an icon next to it:

    Select it and click Remove.
  • The current version can be downloaded from Sun here:
    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
    Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8 and press the Download' button. On the new web page, click the Accept License Agreement' button.
    Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform
    area just below the Accept button.

Thank you very much for your reply. Unfortunately I have had difficulty following your directions.
1> I cant find any files with mfkum. in process manager or HJT scan.
2 Panda Active scan tells me that it won't run in Mozilla Firefox but when I try to run it in IE it defaults to Firefox again. I have not been able to chnage to IE as my default browser.

OK, lets do it this way.

Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop, unzip it to a folder that you can find.


Open HJT Scan Only, make sure all windows and your browser are closed, check this and click on Fix Checked

Highlight the file with the complete path inside the Quote Box and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.
  • Open Pocket Killbox
  • Go to File > Paste from clipboard
  • Set it to Delete on Reboot
  • Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
  • If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
  • Make sure Single File is selected
  • Click on the Red circle with the white X
  • It will ask you to confirm the deletion…Say yes
  • It will ask you to reboot, say yes



Open Firefox and go to Tools> Options > General Tab and take the checkmark OUT of " Firefox should check to see if its the default browser when starting" Then Apply/ OK

Then Open IE and go to Tools> Internet Options> Programs and put a checkmark IN " Internet Explorer should check to see whether it's the default browser" Then Apply/ OK

Open IE and when it asks you to make it the default browser , say yes. You can reverse this when we are done.

Now try running Panda again, it won't run in Firefox. Let me see the Panda report and a new HJT log.

I have removed mfku
and set Pocket Killbox to delete on re boot
I have taken the check mark out of Firefox default box. and set IE explorer to check whether it is the default browser.
IE explorer doesn't ask me the question about default browser.
Itried running Panda again but it still reverts back to Firfox and won't run.

Log looks good :thumbup: The only problem I see is that your running TWO Anti Virus programs , with AV MORE IS NOT BETTER Together they will consume vast amounts of system resources and sometime conflict with one another. Your call but I would strongly advise to uninstall one program.

Panda is great for finding leftover files that need to be deleted. Try this, click on the link for Panda Active Scan, let it open in Firefox, highlight the address in the address bar at the top of your browser and right click and copy it, close Firefox, open Internet Explorer and paste the URL you just copied into the Address bar and click on Enter and IE should take you to Panda. Run the scan and paste the log.

Thanks again Ken. I have uninstalled Norton Virus checker as it didn't seem to be picking up the Trojan that AVG did and it wasn't doing auto updates. I tried opening Panda and cut and pasteing to IE but it still reverted to Firfox. I also tried uninstalling Firefox but then I got messages that the application couldn't be found when I clicked on some links. Could it be something to do with the Google Toolbar that came with Firefox?

Boot into Safemode and go to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox and delete the whole folder, then go here and download and install the latest version. There is something wrong here if when you go to uninstall it that it cant be found.

I have been using Firefox for about 2 years and never had one problem with it, its my default brower but my wife still likes IE and uses it, they never conflict with one another in anyway.

I have deleted Mozilla in safe mode. Then re booted and still having trouble when I click a link in IE I get application not found when I click on a link or enter the mozilla URL in the address bar. I have had to come to another computer to type this message. because I can't access any other sites.

Hi Ken It is me again. I was not able to get IE to take me to any sites, including Mozilla, so I re installed it from a CD I got with a magazine. I have now updated Firefox and am back where I was this morning. My browser switches to Firefox whenever I want to go to a web page. I have also tried changes program access and defaults but whatever I do nothing changes. Thank you again for all your trouble regards Graham Jones

Graham,

Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall Firefox. Then remove the entire folder like you did last time in Safemode.

Then run this cleaner , be sure after running the cleaner that you run the issues scan.

If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
Download and Install CCleaner
  • Click on Run Cleaner
  • Run the Issues Scan < When it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes

What happens when you surf with IE with no Firefox installed?? I don't know what disk your talking about but if you want to use Firefox, I would go right to there website and download and install it as it will be the latest updated version.




Go to the folder that you have HJT in and right click on the HJT Icon and rename it to Analyze.exe, run the scan and post a new log. If this log is clean and you still have problems, I am going to direct you to some windows support sites that deal with this sort of issue.

Thanks again for your help. When I try to surf without Firefox installed I get a message "Application Not Found" so I can't get to Firefox to download the latest version. I have a FREE version of Firefox that came on a disk with a magazine. I used this to install that version and then updated from the Mozilla site. The Trojan no longer shows up on the AVG scan. My problem is that I can't stop Firefox being my default browser. Even when Firefox is uninstalled and the C:programs/firefox folder is deleted. I have downloaded CCleaner and will try uninstalling Firefox again then run CCleaner to see if that works.
