So, every 20 seconds, there is a new malicious file/trojan-type-"thing" found and deleted on my computer. This has been going on for a couple days now. There are three distinct file names that are found in random order every 20 seconds:

-Trojan Horse (really specific, I know)
-Hacktool.Spammer
-Backdoor.HackDefender

There is also a single worm type file that re-appears. It is named W32.Spybot.Worm. I have deleted this several times already but to no avail. I'm thinking that there's probably something else that I haven't discovered yet.

I feel very stupid right now because I think what started this whole mess was one of those links in an IM convo window. It appeared to be an image file that my friend was sending. Like an idiot, I clicked on it and discovered that I couldn't view the picture (probably because it wasn't a picture at all). Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the link. But I'm hoping that it won't be needed to fix the problem.

I've been running scans constantly using Symantec, Spybot: Search and Destroy, Ewido Anti-Spyware, Ad-Aware SE Personal, Trend Micro PC-cillin, Windows Defender (Beta 2), CCleaner, and I really hope that Hijackthis will do the job.

Here is my Hijackthis log:

jeliot, :D

Welcome to the Tom Coyote forum. The infection you have is a very nasty one and difficult to remove. It is a rootkit type of infection and the everyday type of removal tools wont do the job. Follow these instructions very closely, do all the steps in order. There will be more to do after we run this tool.

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log
