Hi people, thanks so much for this site. It has saved me a number of times.
The forum "Security Related Self Help Tutorials" has two topics, both listing downloads and recommendations to keep your PC secure. This is simply confusing.
For example, "Securing Your PC After An Attack" recommends installing Ad-Aware, while "So how did I get infected in the first place?" does not. I suggest that consolidating these threads will make it much simpler for newbies.
One other note. Both threads suggest installing Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, IE-SPYAD . However, the site for IE-SPYAD makes this recommendation:
IE-SPYAD
"If you use IE-SPYAD in conjunction with SpywareBlaster or Spybot Search & Destroy, you should be aware that there is considerable overlap between the Restricted sites lists maintained by these three programs. As a result of that overlap, you may encounter minor issues while updating IE-SPYAD. See the ReadMe for IE-SPYAD for more information and advice.
My recommendation is to use but ONE program to add sites to your Restricted sites zone. Using multiple programs to add sites to your Restricted sites zone leads only to overlap, conflicts, and confusion without necessarily increasing your level of protection."
Also, the IE-SPYAD site strongly recommends installing ZonedOut to manage list installation, updates, etc. However, the site for ZonedOut contains this known issue:
ZonedOut
"If you have by chance "immunized" your computer with Spybot Search and Destroy, and use ZonedOut to "Remove All" restricted sites - ZonedOut will remove your trusted sites as well. Note that if you remove Spybot Search and Destroys Immunization the problem goes away…"
Perhaps you should not recommend all three of these programs? Personally, I think that sorting through the maze at IE-SPYAD to find the install instructions would be overwhelming for a newbie. It also does not provide an un-installer so of course does not appear in Add/Remove. If you continue to recommend IE-SPYAD, you might consider providing your own instructions and direct links (a mini-tutorial like you have for Ad-aware for example) and include un-install directions.
If you continue to recommend all three, instructions for how to manage conflicts (Spybot Immunization for example) might be in order.
Again, thanks for this great site. I hope that you find my suggestion helpful.
