My computer is unable to connect to any website with "symantec" in the url.

I can ping www.google.com and other websites by url just fine (ping www.google.com) from the command prompt.

Trying to ping www.symantec.com or any legitimate variation is redirected to 127.0.0.1.

From web browser - result is "cannot find server"

If I query Google and find a link to http://www.symantec.com/downloads/ and click it, then the url displayed looks like this on my problem computer:

http://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.sym…IRNcnwe1hDJbPk=

I updated Spybot have run Spybot and removed three or four items.

Ran Ad-aware and removed a few items.

Ewido run in safe mode hangs while scanning processes.

Downloaded an update to Norton definitions on another computer (the server on my local wireless network) and pasted it to problem computer. Ran a full system scan with Norton and did not detect any viruses.

Still cannot connect to symantec using liveupdate. Still cannot ping url's with "symantec" in them from problem computer whereas this works just fine from other computers on the same network.

Connecting to liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com…
Connecting to liveupdate.symantec.com…
Connecting to update.symantec.com…
Unable to connect to host
LU1814: LiveUpdate could not retrieve the catalog file of available

Am running Ad-aware SE Personal build 1.03 with SE1R122 08.09.2006 definitions.

Hope you might be able to spot something here. I am at a loss.

Many thanks for your assistance,
Ron B.

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

This:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: xkeyshll - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\xkeyshll.dll

Is a sign of this:

Goldun.Fam

Goldun.Fam is a family of Trojan horse programs that steals users' information entered for authentication on e-gold online web forms.

Goldun trojans may be packaged with the Savage.b MyDoom spambot installer, the SSA-Keylogger installer and/or Haxdoor. Goldun trojans sometimes use rootkit (cloaking) technology as well. Some variants are known to block access to antivirus sites.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

O4 - Startup: PowerReg SchedulerV2.exe

O16 - DPF: {D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000} (Shockwave Flash Object) - https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shock…ash/swflash.cab

O20 - Winlogon Notify: xkeyshll - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\xkeyshll.dll

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of the following noted (in red) file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\windows\system32\xkeyshll.dll <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis! log file into this thread. :)
Micah,
Followed your directions.

Looks like you were spot on!

FYI, also found a corresponding sys file (xkeyshd.sys) with the same created date and removed it also. Both were problematic to delete.

Norton updates back in operation.

Thanks ever so much,
Ron B.

Fix this with HijackThis!:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: xkeyshll - xkeyshll.dll (file missing)

Since the synopsis says it may have a rootkit involved, let's check for that.

Download Blacklight Beta from here:
Blacklight Beta

Hit I accept. It will take you to download page.

Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.

Once saved… double click blbeta.exe to install the program.

Click accept agreement and Click scan

This application may cause a warning from your antivirus. Let it load.

Wait for it to finish.

If it displays any items…don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)

It will drop a log on Desktop that starts with fsbl….(big number)

Post that log.
