At first we have to look at those hidden entries:


Open the HijackThis Folder. Find the file HijackThis.exe, Right Click on the file and Select Rename. Rename Hijackthis.exe to whatever.exe.
Doubleclick whatever.exe and click “Do a systemscan and save a logfile”.
Press that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents in your next reply. :)

Please download VundoFix.exe
to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when
VundoFix appears at reboot.

Reboot the computer, doubleclick whatever.exe and click “Do a systemscan and save a logfile”.
Copy its contents in your next reply. :)

questions. first, why was the hjt exe renamed? and what exactly is this vundo or whatever and what sites or whatnot do i need to avoid getting it again?

Trojan.Vundo is a component of an adware program that downloads and displays pop-up advertisements. It is known to be installed by visiting a Web site link contained in a spammed email.

Recently this trojan hides from HijackThis, so we rename this program to see it :)

Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt

1.
Download and install CCleaner
You don't have to install the CCleaner Yahoo Toolbar unless you definitely want to.
Don't use the program at this moment.

2.
Download, install, and update Ewido Malwarescanner (This is a 30 days trial)
  • Install ewido anti-spyware.
  • Start the program but don't scan for virus at this moment.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
  • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Close Ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan at this moment.

3.
Run Hijackthis, click on 'Do a system scan only'
check only the items listed below:

Make sure your explorer is set to show hidden and system files and folders:
Open Explorer or "My Computer" and click Tools -> Folder Options… and then select the View tab and check the next settings:

Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Select: Display the contents of system folders (Windows XP)
Select: Show hidden files and folders

Remove the next files:
C:\WINDOWS\about.htm

5.
You have to upgrade your Java software.
Sun's Java is updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities. For this reason, it's extremely important that you remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system.
Update Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment….)
    It should have next icon next to it: [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • The current version can be downloaded from Sun here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8' and press the 'Download' button. On the new web page, click the 'Accept License Agreement' button. Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform area just below the Accept button.
6.
Start Ccleaner.
Select in "Windows" only the next items:
Internet Explorer:
- Temporary Internet Files
System:
- Empty Recycle bin
- Temporary Files
Click in Ccleaner on "Run Cleaner".

7.
Reboot your pc into safe mode

Safe mode for Windows XP
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded and before Windows is loaded, begin tapping the F8 (or F5) key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.
8.
Start Ewido anti-malware.
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan
  • Let the program scan your pc, be patient this may take a little time.
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the button "Save Report".
  • Click the "Save report as" button and save the report to your desktop.
  • Close Ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.
Post the results of the Ewido report scan along with a new HijackThis log.

You have to upgrade your Java software.
Sun's Java is updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities. For this reason, it's extremely important that you remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system.

Go here and click on the Download button to the right of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8.
  • Accept the license agreement by clicking the radio button.
  • Under Windows Platform - J2SE™ Runtime Enviroment 5.0 Update 8 click the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language link.
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any entries that refer to Java 2 Runtime Enviroment
    It should have next icon next to it: [external image: Posted Image]
    and then reboot your PC.
  • Navigate to and delete the following folder, if it exists: C:\Program Files\Java.
  • Finally double click the installation file that you downloaded earlier.
The Ewido log reports No action taken - this suggests to me that you didn't follow step 8 correctly.

Scan again with Ewido in safe mode:safe mode for all OS
and then click "apply all actions" to move the file to the quarantine.
