My Notebook: OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600 System Manufacturer Dell Inc. Processor x86 Family 6 Model 14 Stepping 8 GenuineIntel ~1728 Mhz Processor x86 Family 6 Model 14 Stepping 8 GenuineIntel ~1728 Mhz BIOS Version/Date Dell Inc. A06, 09/06/2006 SMBIOS Version 2.4 Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS System Directory C:\WINDOWS\system32 Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume2 Locale United States Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "5.1.2600.2705 (xpsp.050622-1524)" Time Zone GMT Standard Time Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB Available Physical Memory 498.34 MB Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB Page File Space 2.40 GB Page File C:\pagefile.sys The problem is that it's taking about 4 or 5 minutes for the web browser , doesn't matter if firefox or explorer, to show up and to do so I have to open any other application such as media player or Task Manager, after that everything show up at the same time. Also the System Restore is not working, I tried all points available but got the same error message saying that it couldn't restore… there is a hijack this log with the same name as this post in the hijack this forum. Any advices or comments?
Well, your paging file is way to big to start with. In control panel, click on system, then under the advanced tab click on the "settings" button in performance section. Then again under the advanced tab, click on "change". You can leave the intial as is unless it is higher than 1200 (which is what you want to change the maximum to …1200mb). If so then change it to 300 initial. Change the max 1200 and then make sure you click the "set" button.. then click "apply" and "Ok" in each window till it asks you to reboot. Then, dump the browser dns cache. Click on start.. then run..type cmd and hit enter. At the prompt type (or copy and paste) ipconfig /flushdns …. reboot once more and then see if that helps any As far as the system restore not working, you might want to post a hijack this log. Remember that System Restore is not a performance adjusting utility…it should be used as a last ditch effort to SAVE your computer from crashing/loosing data/etc. What you can do in the mean time (while waiting on an expert to go over your log ifyou post one) disable system restore (control panel, system, system restore tab)..disable everything having anything to do system restore.. then reboot. once booted back up, go back and enable it.
There is the log:

Well, I cant post instructions to your log being as I am not an expert however, nothing jumps out at me as being bad. (I would have bet my last dollar that this entry here was bad thought: C:\WINDOWS\stsystra.exe…I also would have lost my last dollar.. go figure) anyhow, if an expert misses this log here I will post it over in the hijack this logs and problems forum for you. Post back and let us know if anything changes after you follow my instructions in my first reply.
yeah, the browser problem is sorted now… thaks for your help. About the system restore… I've tried turning it off and rebooting, but every time I boot up and turn it on… all the old restore points are still there… I believe there is something corrupted in the system files, but all the check ups and other things Dell advised me to do didn't work. And to be honest I'm tired of beeing on the phone with them, worse, paying for the calls…
Click on start… then run… type cmd and press enter. At the prompt type (or copy and paste) SFC /scannow .It may take a little while for that to run but let it (you may need a copy of XP however, since its a dell, you shouldnt… they burn an image onto the drive before they ship'm out). SFC (System File Checker) will relace/restore corrupt system files. When your done running that, or rather, when its done doing its thing..reboot…then, in control panel.. click on admin tools.. then click on services. Go through and find System Restore Service and right click on it. Choose properties.. then under the general tab.. make sure it says "Automatic" in the drop down (If it says disabled post back before you make any changes). Then scroll down to Windows Management Insturmentaion and right click on it (or just look out to the right of it) and make sure it is too set for automatic. Post back and let us know if that solves your system restore issue
They (restore points) are all gone!!!, of course there are 2 left… the 2 first ones, from dell, and it seems to be working fine. thanks for your help! Great job
