Hello and thanks in advance for any guidance! Over the last couple of days our family computer has been infected. The noticable differences are: - Web pages now redirect in the middle of loading. - Start-up can take many minutes and sometimes it just locks up completely. Prior to the infection we had the following security measures in place: - a current paid copy of pest patrol anti-spyware - a few months expired paid copy of norton antivirus 2005 Since the infection we started searching the internet for guidance. Actions from that guidance have included: - download install and run spybot - download install and run ad-aware - download install and run hijackthis The spybot and ad-aware efforts have paid off with slighltly improved performance, but the main problems still exist. I have the log file from hijackthis, but no experience as to which of the found items I should remove. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks again, Eric and family
Hello Family! :wavey:

Thanks,

Hello,

Yep, you've been hijacked by the folks in the Ukraine. <_< That's what all those 017 entries are about. Also, all those R1 entries are not what they seem to be either, and the reason for your redirects.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix Checked".

Reboot your computer.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

FOR CONNECTION PROBLEMS :
Click on Start, Control Panel, select the Network and Internet Connections category or double click on Network Connections, depending on which View you are using. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item. Write down the settings in case you should need to change them back. Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks. If it does not prompt you to reboot go ahead and reboot manually.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

Thanks,
tea
Tea,

Thank you so much for your time.

We really appreciate your efforts, even though we don't really understand it all

Below are the logs from following your instructions.

It looks like there is still one "R1…" remaining, is that correct?

Looking forward to your response,
The Weeks's

Hello,

Most excellent! :D I know it's hard to understand, and it really takes a bit of faith to allow someone you don't know to help this way. The tool you ran (It worked, by the way) deleted the bad files associated with the hijack you were experiencing. It scanned your registry and deleted the bad keys also. Notice the 017s aren't there any more. The R1s were fixed by HijackThis, and the one that remains is all right. :) How is your computer running now? Your log looks clean, but I would like to run an online scan to be sure we didn't miss anything. :)

Use Cleanmgr to clean temporary files:

1. Click > start > run and type cleanmgr and click OK
2. Scan your system for files to remove.
3. Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
4. Click OK to remove those files.
5. Click Yes to confirm deletion.

Perform an onlinescan with panda: (please use this scanner instead of any other scanner!)
Panda Online http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open…click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report in your next reply together with a fresh HijackThis log.

Thanks,
tea
Tea, This is quite the journey, and has been very fruitful! The redirect problem seems to be gone and today was the first day we were able to start-up the computer without it locking up! Awesome! :D Thank you!!! We will follow your latest instructions first thing in the morning. Thanks again, and enjoy your evening with the knowledge of a job well done! The Weeks's
Tea,

Okay…our curiosity got the better of us, we couldn’t wait until tomorrow so we followed your instructions and made this second post tonight.

Hello,

Panda showed a couple of things I don't like, regarding SpywareQuake. I'd like to run the following tool to scan you computer for remnants, please.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Additionally, I noticed in your very first post a comment regarding Norton AntiVirus. Has it already expired? If so, I'd like to suggest a few FREE AVs that are much lighter on system resources, in the top 10 rated AVs, as in very effective! :)

AVG, Avira OR Avast are good FREE antivirus.
Never install more than one antivirus scanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give you problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!

Thank you!
tea
Our sincerest apologies for the delay in our response. :( Also our sincerest appreciation for the help you have provided so far. There is a remarkable difference in the performance of our machine, it is much better. The ball is still in our court to follow the instructions of your latest post. It is hard to believe that a free AV tool would be as trust worthy and effective as a funded tool, although lets be honest, we paid for Norton and for eTrust pestpatrol and we were still infected. Do you have any thoughts which free tool is better? Should we download them all and take turns installing, running, and uninstalling? You mentioned the detriments of running two AV tools at the same time. Are there equivalent detriments to running AV and Pest tools at the same time? Again, Norton and eTrust have been running on this machine but it has always been a relatively low power machine. Can you think of a better combination or alternative to satisfy the protection needs of both virus and spy??? Sorry to inundate you with so many questions, but we have been finding it hard to get on the computer lately so I wanted to beg for as much help as possible while I had the chance. :) Thanks again, and if you don’t hear from us in a bit, it is because we are expecting our 2nd child any day now. Wish us luck. Thanks, Eric and Bobbie
Hello,

No problem. Life sometimes has a way of happening!

It is hard to believe that a free AV tool would be as trust worthy and effective as a funded tool, although lets be honest, we paid for Norton and for eTrust pestpatrol and we were still infected.
Do you have any thoughts which free tool is better?

Been there and done that, so I speak from firsthand experience here. :) AVG, Avira OR Avast are good FREE antivirus. I use Avast!, and have done so after having a horrible experience with malware and Norton's inability to stop it. It is also lighter on resources, and in the top 10 AVs along with the paid programs!

Should we download them all and take turns installing, running, and uninstalling?

This is your choice, just be sure not to run them all simultaneously. :)

Are there equivalent detriments to running AV and Pest tools at the same time?

No, layered protection is a good thing! An AntiVirus program is not the same as an AntiSpyware program, or a Host program. Of course, there is a line you can cross and run too much. As an example of what is acceptable, I'll use my system. I run Avast! AV, Spybot S&D, Ad Aware SE, and I have a router, and use Windows Firewall. I could probably add a couple of programs to that and be all right, but I am comfortable with my combination. :) It works well, as I don't have a super hopped up system and need to conserve resources where I can, like you.

Please take your time……I've had 6 children of my own, so I know how that goes. ;) Below are my "standard" protection suggestions and precautions for your perusal, at your convenience. Please take care….all of you!! :wavey:

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

It is very important to maintain your Firewall.
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Ad-Aware SE
A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.
Hey Tea, Thanks for checking in. Yes, we now have a new addition to our family. Born September 25th, and we're just now STARTING to get back into the groove of things. We only have 2 now…can't imagine how you managed 6! We're looking forward to continuing our discussions! Thanks for the help, and we're looking forward to more 'cause our computer is getting back to poor performance. Regards, The Weeks'
