Hello,
I have followed all of the following steps:
Installed and updated and run SypBot. Cleaned everything found.
Installed and updated and run AdAware. Cleaned everything found.
Installed and updated ewido.
Re-started in safe mode and run ewido and saved the log. Cleaned everything found.
Installed Hijackthis and put it in it's own folder.
Run Hijackthis and saved the log.

Problems I'm having-
Popups starting on the desktop.
Popups when working in Internet Explorer. Sometimes IE "freezes" for a little while.
Computer and internet use slow.

Here are my Hijackthis and ewido logs:

I thank you in advance for your help. This has been bothering me A LOT!
Thank You!
johnas, :D

Welcome to Tom Coyote, you have a few issues going on that we need to address. You have Ewido installed but you ran it uncorrectly, no big deal, I want you to set it up this way and we need to run another scan to remove all that bad stuff.

You may want to print this out as we will be offline for part of the fix.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
===========================
  • Once you have downloaded Ewido Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close Ewido Anti-Spyware <– Do not run the scan yet.
===========================

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log into your next reply.
==================================

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, tick these entries and click on Fix Checked.

1. I need to see the Vundo Report
2. I need to see the Ewido Report
3. I need a New HJTLog
Hi Ken,
Thanks so much for your reply and help. The good news is that my computer seems to be running much better, with no pop-ups (knock on wood).
I followed your instructions, and these were the issues that I had:
1. When I ran VundoFix.exe I didn't get an option to check Run VundoFix as a task.
2. VundoFix found no problem files.
3. When I ran HJT, the scan worked fine, but when I tried to Fix Checked, I got this error:

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs303169590.dll)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at [removed], reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 6.0.2900.2180
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.

4. After clicking OK, it fixed the files normally, as far as I could tell.
5. In Safe Mode, I could not find nsm17.dll or repairs303169590.dll. I did change the options to show all files, as you instructed.
6. While in Safe Mode, I could not do a search for some reason. I tried all different methods (right-clicking, Start Menu, Menu bar), but none worked.
7. I searched after re-booting in normal mode, and could not find either file.

Again, despite these little things, my computer is running normally at this point, and I'm very happy. Here are my reports. I hope they're clean.

Hello Jonas, :D

Your log is looking much better but still a few more things to do.

Viewpoint is not Malware itself but installs without your knowledge or consent and serves no purpose, so lets remove it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

We must disable the Real-Time Protection feature of Windows Defender for it may interfere with the fix.

To disable Real-Time Protection:
  • Go to "Tools" | "General Settings"
  • Scroll down to "Real-time protection >Options"
  • Uncheck "Turn on real-time protection (recommended)"
  • Remember to reactivate this feature when we have finished all our work.

You also need to disable Trojan Hunter and Ewido Background Guard.

Next we need to remove this bad service.
  • Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
  • Scroll down to msexch40.exe
  • Double Click that service to open it.
  • Click on Stop Service.
  • Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
  • OK your way out of the program.
  • Open HJT > Misc Tools > Delete an NT Service
  • Type in msexch40.exe
  • Then click on OK, it will ask you to reboot, do so.

Open HJT Scan Only, both these entries should be gone, if not have HJT remove them

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

O23 - Service: msexch40.exe - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msexch40.exe (file missing)

Post a new HJT log please and let me know how your doing.

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

Be sure to follow the instructions for System Restore because everything we removed is backed up in that program and if you ever use it to revert your system to an earlier date, you can reinfect your self all over again.

Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < When it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes
Tutorial for CCleaner

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
* Clean out your TEMP FILES
* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

* Go to My Computer/ C: Drive/ Documents and Settings/ Every User on this Computer Local Settings
and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder and the Temporary Internet Files Folder <–Just the contents, not the folder itself.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Temp and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder <– But not the temp folder itself.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder. <–But not the Prefetch folder itself.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember, You will have to be in Catagory View to see this

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one. Just install one because with AV software…MORE IS NOT BETTER.

AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains
in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed,
although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use
them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this
for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,
this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't
access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you.
Hi Ken, Unfortunately, I have terrible news. My computer is now restarting automatically after it's been up a couple of minutes. I get an error message that the system has recovered from a serious error. Then it gives me some error codes and restarts. I went into the sytem properties and turned off the restart after error option. I also did a minimum startup, and that took care of the restarting. However, now I can't get windows defender or ewido to work. This thing is all messed up. and I don't know what to do. It was going so well! Thanks for any suggestions.
So sorry Johnas, it was going so well, do you have the XP disk??

Here are a couple of tips.
  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
    You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

If you have the XP Disk or the Recovery disk, you can boot from it and go into the Recovery Consule and do a repair.

Here also are some things to read that may help along with some windows support sites that may be able to help you.

Ken :D
Ken, I did as you said, and after turning all my services back on in msconfig, it restarts itself again. I went throught the services, picking what I could recognize I need, and only turned them on. It seems to be working so far. I'll have to read through your links and see what I can find. Thanks for your help.
Hey johnas,

Lets hope it keeps working :D

The reason they call it Malware ( Malicious Ware ) is because the slimeballs that write all this garbage have only one goal and thats to steal anything they can from you, most are computer programmer wanabees, they write very poor code and sometimes even if a computer is cleaned of the malware or virus, it can and does sometimes leave a little damage on your system. I am not saying this is the case here but it could be.

If it keeps happening, if you have the XP disk, you can bypass the Recovery Console and proceed just like you are going to install windows , except at that point it will just copy the Operating System over the one you have installed replacing any missing or corrupted files.

Instructions here

XP Repair option

Hope this info helps.
