Thanks
Hi I'm Angelfire and it'll be my pleasure to assist you in your problem. Reasearching Hijackthis logs could take sometime so please, be patient while I research a fix for you. Also, I have to let experts check my fixes first before bringing them to you. Please observe these while we work: 1.) Please stick with this thread until we are finished, do not start a new topic here or start a new thread at other forums. Do not worry, We were trained to help and never give up until we get you all fixed up. 2.) Stop if you have questions!! Never proceed if something is unclear to you. We don't want to start all over again. 3.) Avoid downloading other applications or other anti-spyware programs unless you really need to. 4.) Lastly, please be patient and never lose hope. Sometimes, it will take us several tries and posts to get something done. Sit back tight, I'll be back for you!
First of all I need you to download some programs for use later.

Download About:Buster from here. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster . Do NOT use it yet

Download CWShredder from here, install it, check for updates but again, don't use it yet.

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix

Reboot into Safe Mode

You may want to print these instructions here or save them in notepad since you'll work offline

To enter Safe Mode

Click start > turn off computer > Restart > When you hear the computer beep once, begin tapping F8 rapidly > this will bring up a menu > use your keyboard to scroll to safe mode > hit enter

You may need to see your hidden files first

Windows XP

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Then Open cwshredder that you downloaded in the first step. Close all browser windows and click on the fix/next button.

find and delete these files if listed:

C:\WINDOWS\ceuzr.dll
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\za.exe
c:\counter.cab

Click start > search > click "all files and folders" > under the "more advanced options", make sure the first three boxes are checked > then go to the box that says "all or part of the file name" > type these in:

dusrans.exe
asfrm.exe

then, click search. After that, delete all instances of those files.

Open hijackthis > choose scan only > tick the boxes beside these entries in bold

Close all your browsers and all windows that are open then click "Fix Checked"

The following step is important as you may have several malware files in your temp directories.

Then browse to the C:\documents and settings\Your User Name (repeat for all other user names in documents and settings)\local settings\temp folder and delete all files and folders in it. Then browse to the C:\Window\Temp folder and delete all files and folders in it. Then in internet explore click tools>internet Options>General. Click on Delete Files make sure you get all offline content as well.

Now navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe. Click Begin Removal to allow AboutBuster to scan. When it has finished, AboutBuster will open a 'Scan Completed' window. Click OK. Another information window will open. Click on Exit. AboutBuster will inform you that a log has been created. Click OK. I will need you to post that log later.

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act?
      Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • Under How to scan?
      All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software:
      All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports:
      Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan?
      Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
  • When the scan has finished:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
    • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)
  • When done, click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the Ewido Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
Reboot in Normal Mode.

Run hijackthis again and post a fresh log along with the about buster log and the Ewido log. Please tell us how your machine is behaving. Thanks.
Sorry I took so long, I was out of town.
OK here is what I found.
First off, the My Computer icon is missing. I went to the screen settings and put a checkmark in the box to show the My Computer icon and clecked APPLY but it doesn't show up….when I open the settings again, the box is not checked. I did go to explorer and changed the settings so that I can see all the files.
None of the files you wanted me to delete were on the computer. Not in the directory you listed nor anywhere else when I searched for them.
I completed the Hijackthis fixes, deleted all temporary files, ran Aboutbuster. I could not run Ewido from Safe Mode, the screen was larger than the display and I couldn't access the buttons. I tried to change the screen resolution but I guess you can't while in Safe Mode. I ran Ewido from the normal log in. I ran Ewido Today and it said nothing was found. I included an earlier Ewido scan.

Here is the Ewido, About Buster, and HijackThis logs! Everything seems ok with the exception of the My Computer icon.
In the Hijack this log it still shows the Trusted Zone items I deleted…I deleted them and rescanned…they still show up.

Run Kaspersky Online Scanner

Notice!

To uninstall, please go to the computer control panel and select "Add/Remove Programs." Close all Internet Explorer windows before uninstalling the Kaspersky Online Scanner.

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.

  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:

    + Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    o Scan Options:
    + Scan Archives

The computer seems to be running fine. Here are the logs. I ran ewido from safe mode, but I don't know if all the settings were correct because of the screen size issue.

On your next reply, please include:
  • A Fresh Hijackthis log
  • A detailed description on how your computer is behaving
OK, I finished that. there was no file that you listed asfrm…on the computer. The computer seems to be running fine with the exception that it seems to boot slow (could just be my perception) and when I try to update my OS to SP2 I get an error with explorer and IE closes. Some Microsoft pages say that I have SP2 installed, but winver and HijackThis indicate SP1….any suggestions?

Thanks for your help!

Hi, may I ask if adaware found anything?

Also, when is the last time you defragmented your Hard drive?

To confirm what service pack you have there, go to the Control Panel, double-click on the System icon, and on the General tab it will tell you your system's details, i.e., which version of XP he has, and if SP2 is installed, it will also be shown there.

Download combofix.exe

1. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
2. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

==========================
Your Java is out of date….
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  • Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Click Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download Java Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8, and install it to your computer.
==========================
On your next reply, please include:
  • A Fresh Hijackthis log
  • combofix log
Thanks.
I don't remember if Adaware found anything or not. Here are the logs..5.txtI still can't get IE to download SP2. I have SP1.

I would like you to scan a few files for me.

Please go HERE. Click browse then, navigate to this file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmcpl.exe

Then click submit.

Please post the results to your next reply

If Jotti is too busy, you can go HERE and do the same as above.
==========================
Since you are having difficulty downloading SP2, I suggest that you go here and order the SP2 CD from Microsoft…

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa…us/default.mspx

After October 10th, Windows Updates will only be available for Windows XP SP2, and you cannot expect to go online with an upatched (for newest vulnerabilites) SP1 without being infected!

Here is a link to an excellent site for information on installing SP2…

http://www.windowstalk.org/sp2.htm
==========================
On your next reply, please include:
  • A Fresh Hijackthis log
  • results of the jotti scan
Well I resolved the issue of installing SP2.
When I ran HJT the 09 listings were not there so I wasn't able to fix those. (maybe the installation of SP2 and thier tools fixed it?) The file you wanted scanned, dmcpl.exe was not in the location you indicated. There was one in C:\windows\system32\reinstallbackups\00006\driverfiles….The scanner indicated that the file was OK.
Here is my HJT log….see anything else? Everything seems to be OK on my end.

Here are some free programs that can help you improve your pc's security.
  • If you are using IE then I think it is time to change to Mozilla FireFox. Mozilla FireFox offers not only better security but it also has more features than IE
    Remember that sometimes you still need to use IE for certain sites like Microsoft Updates

  • AntiSpyWare Applications - This programs will deal with the Adwares, Spywares, hijackers and dialers in your system. It is recommended that you download, install and run at least 2 Antispyware applications.

     »Adaware - This is a great free program by Lavasoft. It deals with spyware cookies, spywares, hijackers, dialers in your system. This is a must have program to keep your computer secure.
    ~You can download it from here
    ~There is a tutorial on how to use Adaware properly here

    »Spybot Search and Destroy - This is also a great Antispyware program by Patrick Kolla. It has a Tea-Timer feature which works like Spyware Guard. Use Tea-Timer only when you don't choose to install Spyware Guard.
    ~You can download it from here . Just choose a mirror and off you go.
    ~There is also a tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

    Note: Make sure you update them at least once every two weeks or once a week.
  • Anti-Trojans- Trojans are programs that appear clean, good and entertaining on the outside but are very destructive when you open it. Here are some free programs that deals with trojans:

    »Ewido Anti-Malware- A very very good trojan detector. It is only a trial program and it offers realtime protection for 15 days and after that you can use its on-demand scanner for free. Remember to update its database after installing it.
    ~You can download it from here
    ~If automatic updates wont work you can download the manual updates here

    »A-squared- This is also a great program from Emsisoft. This is a freeware and you can use it to scan your systems for trojans and other forms of malware.
    ~You can download it here
  • MVPS Hosts file- The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
    ~You can get MVPS hosts file here
*****FOR MORE REALTIME PROTECTION*****

» Install SpyWare Blaster- It prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
~You can download it from here
~You can read the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

» Install Spyware Guard- This is one of the best realtime protection programs that stops spyware before it is executed. It also prevents spyware from downloading in your system.
~You can download it from here
~You can read the tutorial on how to use Spyware Guard here

» Install WinPatrol - Also a necessary programs because this alerts you if an unknown program tries to install and run in your computer with your notice/approval. Mostly detects malicious Active X and malicious java script files.
~You can download it from here
~You can get some information about the working of WinPatrol HERE

» IESpyAds- A nice little program that can add almost 5000 restricted sites to IE so you will not be redirected to those "bad" sites.
~You can download it from here
~If you want to know how IEspyads work you can take a look at it here
~Please not that IESpyAds only works with IE

» Windows Update- Always check for updates of your operating system to keep yourself protected from its vulnerabilities.
~Get the updates from here

Pls. check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Remember: It is alright to have more than 3 antispyware applications and realtime protection but never more than 1 AntiVirus or more than 1 Firewall in your system. Always UPDATE your AntiVirus application and do a scan at least once a week together with your AntiSpyware applications to ensure that your system is clean.
