Three AM today tried to access a chat room at support.dell but was blocked by gray window with "about.blank" on heading.
This repeated itself at two different other chat rooms.

My homepage has NOT changed, no strange pop-ups or pages showing up. Have already run Ewido, SpyBot S & D, Ad-Aware, and several other fine programs with no sign of a baddie.

I am questioning M$'s Rights Management (three files) i DL'd
yesterday. Thanks in advance, here's the HJT Log….moi

Hi moi:

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please proceed with this fix in the order provided below.

Those M$'s Rights Management entries/files you were questioning, appear to be genuine Microsoft.

About:Blank is known to be associated with Cool Web Search, but I do not see any sign of it in your Hijack This log.
Lets run CWShredder and see if it helps.
It will usually say it did not find anything, even when it removes Cool Web Search and is an oddity with the program.

Please download CWShredder, from one of the following sites.
http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/onl…/cwshredder.exe
http://www.majorgeeks.com/CWShredder_d3019.html
http://intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

First, be sure to update CWShredder.
Then close every window, disconnect from Internet and doubleclick the CWShredder icon on your Desktop.
Click Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Then, please reboot.

Next:
Disable SpywareGuard:
You have SpywareGuard installed. While this is a great program, we need to temporarily disable (not uninstall) the program because it might stop our fix.
  • Right click the running icon ofSpywareGuard, it will open the program.
  • Then go to Menu, file, exit.
  • Then confirm the program is closed.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable SpywareGuard again.

Disable TeaTimer:
Please disable TeaTimer as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean. To disable TeaTimer:
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu , and make sure "Advanced Mode " is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer " and OK any prompts
  • Restart your computer.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable TeaTimer again.

Disable Ewido:
Please disable Ewido, as it may interfere with the fix.
To disable Ewido:
From the system tray:
  • Right-click the system tray icon and uncheck real time protection.
    or From within Ewido -
  • Under 'Your security status', if the real time protection is active, deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive'.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Ewido.

Close all windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check beside each of these entries listed below, if still present.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

The following are optional fixes:

If you did not add these policies, or ask a program such as Spybot S&D to do so, these can be fixed with Hijack This.
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it into this topic.

Please advise if any problems remain.

hi Piatan…
I kicked ewido off the roster, may buy it someday.
09 (two entries) both "extra" for Messy-danger. I utilize
plug-ins for good ol' Ad Aware…keeps the lid on Messenger.
Can I del these two 09's?
Funny thing happened on the way to the Forum:
Was turning all the av etc tools back on, when got
asked by AVG if I wanted to change home page?
(or was it SpyBot?) here's what wanted to go in:
C:\WINDOWS\system 32\ blank.htm !
Interesting. of course I blocked it.

unable for some reason not to be able to
insert Local page, home page etc in Reg.
And this morning, doing online banking and
new window(about5 inches wide) came up.
on header, ABOUT:BLANK which changed
to the banks name. Wonderful Life, pal
Thanks for reading all this…Dutch (moi)

Hi moi:

Can I del these two 09's?

Just a guess on my part, but are you asking if you can fix the two 09 Windows Messenger entries ? If so, I don't know what the effect would be on the Program, since I don't use it. Try it if you like and if there are problems with MS Messenger, those entries can be restored from Hijack This backups. So dont delete the HJT backups, until you are sure of the result.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them, if found:

C:\WINDOWS\system 32\ blank.htm

Exit Explorer and reboot into Normal Mode.
