Bad Case of Spyware

Hey guys,

A friend of mine told me he had spyware and asked if knew anything about removing it. I told him I'd take a look.

After examining his computer (Emachines Windows XP SP1) i realized it was worse than I ever could have imagined. The spyware had somehow implanted a proprietary(and fake) Spyware Removal tool into Windows which seemed to have taken over the system. The browser kept diverting to porn sites and Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D turned up nothing. HijackThis is always my last resort but I have no idea how to read the logs.

So here is his log:

Do you know what this critter does for aliving:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tfce8396] C:\WINDOWS\system32\tfce8396.exe

If not, do this:

Please go to these free online file checkers:

Kaspersky Online File Scanner

Jotti Online File Scanner

VirusTotal Online File Scanner

And submit this file for a virus scan:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\tfce8396.exe

Let me know the results.

You don't have to try all three.

If one says it's "infected", you can stop there.
:)
Ok i scanned it on Kaspersky and virus total. Kaspersky said it was nothing and Virus Total said McAfee said it might be "potentially unwanted program Adware-SAHAgent" I dunno…its been there forever(since the first HiJackThis log i ever made) Is that all you found?
CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tfce8396] C:\WINDOWS\system32\tfce8396.exe
(If you think it's "friendly", leave this entry alone)

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Now, please go to:

Start –> Run

In the box type in services.msc then hit < Enter > (or click OK)

In the Name column look for:

ZESOFT

< Double-click > it.

In the dialogue box that pops up, check in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe

That's how to be sure you have the right one.

Now, click Stop to stop that rogue process.

In the Startup type box, change it to Disabled.

Click Apply then OK

Close the services.msc window.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of the following noted (in red) file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\windows\system32\tfce8396.exe <— file
(If you think it's "friendly", leave file alone)

C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis! log file into this thread. :)
