I'd try it just as you are. If that won't do it, try again in "safe mode". If that won't do it, we'll most like have to take the measures I alluded to. :)
nope did not do it. i'll try again in safe mode but, not sure. there are still obvious conflicts in registry editor. I am totally perplexed as this Altnet file that appears in registry as software cannot just be "Deleted" from registry altogether as there is now an emptyh folder with no subfolders. "Dashboard" subfolder is now thankfully gone. But still the obvious permission conflicts now with 9 different names/permissions/ that affect this key and other subkeys.
no i tried it in the safe mode as well. Still unable to remove from registry. Also it is looking like there must be some conflicts in my registry or else I have even bigger problems. When I was in SAFE MODE just now. My keyboard was not functioning at all. Lukily, all the commands for opening fixme.reg were with mouse. Keyboard is working fine in regular mode , but cannot tye charachters, change cap or number locks, or even CTRL DEL when I'm in the safe mode. I got an email from someone that suggested this: "First of all install software for each user account and run it for each user account separately. If problem persists go to following steps. AltNet has some issues that even using the Administrator Account, you can not delete some registry entries created by this spyware trying either manually or using a software. In both cases the problem is that AltNet generates these keys on MULTI LOGIN systems with access to other users of same Operating System. The only solution to this problem is the you will have to log in with different LOGIN ACCOUNTS in windows one by one and then manually try to remove these two or three registry entries. In case you do not know how to remove registry entries manually, try to install ScanSpyware using each login and then run scan and remove spyware found. This may help but is not guaranteed because you will be using limited access for that account, while running ScanSpyware. Here are the Altnet Removal Instructions. Please follow step by step and you should be logged in Administrator account during whole process. It is divided in two parts: 1. Change the registry permissions 2. Run Scanspyware and delete the infections 1.Changing Registry Permissions Open the registry (Start->Run->regedit) and select the keys [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Altnet] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet\Dashboard] Start with the top registry Key which is Altnet and work down and follow these instruction to change the permission for above registry Keys. Right click on Altnet then click on permission, click on add, click on advanced, click on find , and look for your log on name and click on okay twice to get back to permissions for Altnet. Now, put a check mark in the boxes for allow after click on advanced, click on the tab for owner and highligt your log under \'change owner to\' and check the box that say\'s : \'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects\' and click on ok, click on apply and click ok. Continue the same for the other registry Keys listed as Dashboard. 2.Run ScanSpyware and delete the infections Run ScanSpyware and delete the infections as usual." What do you think about that Micah? Do you also think that registry conflicts could be affecting my ability to type in safe mode? or am I just getting bonkers after 16 or 17 hours trying to resolve this weirdness. // that's a rhetorical question on the bonkers part :)
From your last HijackThis! log posted:

O23 - Service: Webroot Spy Sweeper Engine (WebrootSpySweeperService) - Webroot Software, Inc. - C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeper.exe

SpySweeper can inhibit registry changes.

Are you certain it's NOT the problem?

I removed spsweper and spyware blaster after I downloaded ewido scanner. I still have my mcafee running and there is also a copy of spybot on my desktop. I tried to dele other spyware scanners because of possible conflict. The email suggestions I received, was of no use as I still am having trouble setting permissions in my registry editor. Is quite possible that some conflicts are present because of changes made to registry by all the different scanning programs I have run over the last couple days.
I have to believe the following mentioned in the emailed repair suggestion above may have something to do with this: "AltNet has some issues that even using the Administrator Account, you cannot delete some registry entries created by this spyware trying either manually or using a software. In both cases the problem is that AltNet generates these keys on MULTI LOGIN systems with access to other users of same Operating System" I am thinking that backing up and reloading may soon be my only option, but I know that reloading CD burning programs and generation keys/codes, video cam, and internet downloaded programs I have gotten in the past are sure to suffer if I reload my operating system. This will be a double dilly of a pickle if I can't backup my current System State due to the fact that I have all the registry conflicts.
A link to the thread where I did this:

Click Me

In case you're interested….
============================

Make a folder on your machine and download:

RegDACL

Click the "Download Freeware version as small zip file" link, and download the zip file into that folder.

Unzip it in that folder.

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

RegDACL HKLM\Software\ALTNET /L > junk.txt
notepad junk.txt

Save it as checkme.bat, and save it into the RegDACL folder.

CLOSE NOTEPAD!!!

Now, the checkme.bat file.

A Notepad window will open up.

Paste it's contents into your next post.
:)
junk.txt- notepad file is bank/empty. I can let you know what the message is in the C\:WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe says if you need me too.
Humor me, and do this.

Please download/unzip this:

Registry Search by Bobbi Flekman

on regsearch.exe, and search for this:

ALTNET

Make sure all the boxes are checked under "Search".

It may take a while to run, so be patient. When finished, the search results will appear in your text editor,

Paste the contents of the search results into your next post.
:)
C:\Documents and Settings\William M Dahnke\My Documents\RegOwnerZip>RegDACL HKLM\Software\ALTNET /L 1>junk.txt 'RegDACL' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file C:\Documents and Settings\William M Dahnke\My Documents\RegOwnerZip>notepad junk.txt _
C:\Documents and Settings\William M Dahnke\My Documents\RegOwnerZip>RegDACL HKLM\Software\ALTNET /L 1>junk.txt

I'd say you're running it from a ZIP file.

Sounds like it's not properly "unzipped" to me.
Here is the Bobbi Flekman Log. I'll try to redo the regsearch.zip file again also: REGEDIT4 ; Registry Search 2.0 by Bobbi Flekman © 2005 ; Version: 2.0.1.0 ; Results at 8/6/2006 6:33:04 PM for strings: ; 'altnet' ; Strings excluded from search: ; (None) ; Search in: ; Registry Keys Registry Values Registry Data ; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE HKEY_USERS [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altnet] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\McAfee\VSCore\NVP] ; Contents of value: ; Adware-P2PNet ; Adware-TopSearch Adware-Altnet ; Adware-Altnet Adware-BDE Adware-Adroar.dr ; Adware-BDE Adware-Adroar.dr ; Adware-Adroar.dr ; "DetectionExclusions"=hex(7):41,64,77,61,72,65,2d,50,32,50,4e,65,74,00,41,64,\ 77,61,72,65,2d,54,6f,70,53,65,61,72,63,68,00,41,64,77,61,72,65,2d,41,6c,74,\ 6e,65,74,00,41,64,77,61,72,65,2d,42,44,45,00,41,64,77,61,72,65,2d,41,64,72,\ 6f,61,72,2e,64,72,00,00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\AltnetPointsManager] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\AltnetPointsManager] "command"="c:\\program files\\altnet\\points manager\\points manager.exe -s" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\McafeeToDel] "c:\\windows\\temp\\altnet"="TOCLEAN" "c:\\program files\\altnet"="TOCLEAN" [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1656271381-1253253541-2615726521-1005\Software\Google\NavClient\1.1\History] ; Contents of value: ; úØÔd "altnet"=hex:fa,d8,d4,44 ; Contents of value: ; kïÔd "altnet removal"=hex:4b,ef,d4,44 ; Contents of value: ; ªòÔd "altnet remove"=hex:aa,f2,d4,44 ; Contents of value: ; ǍÕd "removing altnet from registry"=hex:c7,8d,d5,44 [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1656271381-1253253541-2615726521-1005\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru\5603] "005"="altnet" "013"="altnet.css" [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1656271381-1253253541-2615726521-1005\Software\Microsoft\Search Assistant\ACMru\5604] "012"="altnet" [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1656271381-1253253541-2615726521-1005\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Regedit] "LastKey"="My Computer\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Altnet" [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1656271381-1253253541-2615726521-1005\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu2\Programs\Altnet] ; End Of The Log…
