Hi Kelly1725:

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please proceed with this fix in the order provided below.

Look in Add/Remove Programs and see if there are any unusual/unknown Programs, or any that have been recently added, of which you were not aware. Be sure to check them thouroughly, before Uninstalling/Removing.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

OPTIONAL–WeatherBugGo to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs option. If found check your version of the program(s). Versions 6.4.0.9 and onward are not considered Adware. Your OPTION if you want to keep it or update to a version without adware.

Close all windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check beside each of these entries listed below, if still present.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winlog] winlog.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

The following are optional fixes:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe 1

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them, if still present:

AWS WeatherBug is optional
C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe 1

Please perform a search for the following files shown DARK and delete all instances. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.
winlog.exe
ALCXMNTR.EXE

Exit Explorer, enable hidden files and reboot.

If you were unable to delete any of the files, then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
Let the system reboot.

Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_07-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it into this topic.

Please advise if any problems remain.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.
Hi,
I removed everything you said except for Weatherbug. I'll probably just upgrade it instead of removing it. I also updated Java. Here's my new Hijack This log:

Hi Kelly1725:

Did you notice any unknown Programs in Add/Remove Programs ? If so, please Uninstall/Remove them.

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please proceed with this fix in the order provided below.

This R1 entry looks to be new. In the event your Internet connection is lost, or other problems arise after fixing the R1 entry with Hijack This, please do the following.

Since you haveHijackThis in its own folder, any entry fixed with Hijack This can be restored from the HJT backups folder. It is as simple as doing the following.

Open HijackThis |Click Config |Click Backups | click on the R1 entry | click Restore.

164190

Next:
Close all windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check beside each of these entries listed below, if still present.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = iexplore

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please advise if any problems remain.

Please use the [external image: Posted Image] button to reply.
Hi, I didn't notice any unknown programs in add/remove. I ran HijackThis and removed the file. Everything seems to working now. I'll let you know if any problems occur. Thank you!! :)
If there are no problems, please be sure to use the link to see TonyKlein's good advice (below). Those Protection programs offered free, are some of the best available.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
Click the "Delete Cookies" button
Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
Go to Tools > Options.
Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.

* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin

Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Also, see TonyKlein's good advice and highly recommended FREE PROTECTION PROGRAMS. A must for all PC users.
