Hello Alan Jones;

I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. Hijack This cannot see entries that have been disabled, using MSconfig. This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:

Please click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program. If it asks to reboot, do not reboot.

Then, please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it as a reply.

Please use the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified.
Hello Piatan,

Thank you.

I have run Hijack This with msconfig set as suggested. Here is the log. Thanks.

Alan

Hi Alan Jones;
Your Hijack This log looks to be clear.
However, there are two entries in your (015) Trusted Zone, that could be fixed with Hijack This, if you wish.

Since you state that you feel there may be a Trojan present, it would be good form to run a few scanners, to search out your PC.

Please use the following links to run one, or more of these online Virus Scanners and let them fix whatever they find.

Firefox, Opera, Netscape, etc. users please use the following link which is supported.
http://be.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/h…call_launch.php

Internet Explorer users can also use the following links.

When using Trend Micro, be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.
Bitdefender and let it delete everything it finds.
TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:
Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack….
  5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Please then paste the contents of the text file to this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.

  7. Please use the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified.

When we have finished and your PC has been determined to be clean, please uninstall Ewido (trial).
Hi Piatan,

Many thanks for your help.

I ran the Trend Micro virus scan - nothing came up. I then ran Ewido and it found 'File:anyuser@a[1].txt' in C:\Documents and settings\any user\cookies and 15 infected files.

You mention that there are two entries in my (015) Trusted Zone that might be fixed with Hijack This. Please advise what I should do.

Thank you.

Alan
Hi Alan Jones;

Those items Ewido reported are nothing more than tracking cookies, that every site places on your PC. You even got one upon entry to this site. They are usually no danger at all, but should occasionally be removed, just to do a little house cleaning.

Sorry, I didn't specify how to use Hijack This to delete those two entries. Here's the drill.

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following entries:

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.canopus.us
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.ntlworld.com

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button.

Then, please reboot. With that done your PC looks to be clean.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK

Protection Recommendations:

If you dont have these three FREE programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system, but only one of each.

The following is recommended reading by everyone, not just those who have become infected.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :wavey:
Glad we could be of help. :D
