My computer crashed I think due to the above mentioned virus and I had to reinstall windows.

After doing so, I tried and possibly succeeded in deleting the virus using vcleaner, ewido anti-spyware, ad-aware a few times in safe mode. my computer is still quite unstable now and tends to crash or be non-responding and the hard drive is making 'background' working noise but nothing is going on on the screen. so that's why i'm posting my log here. please see if there's anything odd with it. thanks!

Welcome to the forum :wavey:

Two bugs are loose on your machine.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!
Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0693A3F7-BBB0-AF8D-1D75-B76BE50CDDC8} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [.nvsvc] C:\WINDOWS\system\smss.exe /w

O16 - DPF: {62475759-9E84-458E-A1AB-5D2C442ADFDE} - http://a1540.g.akamai.net/7/1540/52/200404…meInstaller.exe

O23 - Service: Windows Log - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvcd.exe

Then click "Fix checked".

Now,please go to:

Start –> Run

In the box type in services.msc then hit (or click OK)

In the Name column in the next screen look for:

Windows Log

it.

In the dialogue box that pops up, check in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvcd.exe

That's how to be sure you have the right one.

Now, click Stop to stop that rogue process.

In the Startup type box, change it to Disabled.

Click Apply then OK

Close the services.msc window.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Find and delete:

C:\WINDOWS\system\smss.exe <— file

Delete this smss.exe in this folder only!!!
The one in the system32 folder is the "real one". This one here is bogus.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvcd.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis! log file into this thread. :)
thanks for your quick reply!
i should also note that my computer or many programs crash within 5-10 mins of startup or after running it once, it will freeze and most often than not, i have to do a cold boot.
too soon to tell if the removal of the bugs solved this or not.
it might have to do with the reinstallation of windows??!

when i went into tthe services.msc thing
it was already set to what you suggested…ie. stop and disabled.

anyways, here's my new hijack log. thanks!

Actually, windows froze up shortly after I posted that reply. Ahhhh! Should I wait it out? Or possibly reinstall windows again? There was 1 file or something that XP couldn't locate when installing but I forgot what it was. >_<
If it's not too big of a hassle, I'd suggest reinstalling windows. Especially if you had some error message the last time you installed it. We could run all the scans in the world, and they may, or may not catch anything. Better be sure your "foundation" is solid before building your house. ;)
Only problem is I have a dell laptop and the DVD drive is quacky. It works one out of 99 times, literally. I did get an external drive though recently. can i reinstall from that? does it matter which partition i install it in? does it matter?
I really don't know.
